Question

Trying to Export display from Solaris to Fedora/FC5

Asked by: wta2

What I would like to do is be able to view the full display from a Solaris Server on a workstation with Fedora/FC5 installed.

It has been a long time since I worked with any version of unix, and I really feel like I am runnning in circles right now.

I have installed Fedora/FC5, configured the Xserver and XDMCP with all of the info I could come up with. When I allow connection with xhost + and set my display at <ipaddress>:0.0 most of the application windows display, but one does not. It is my understanding that this window will never display due to coding issue with the application. Anyway, I would like to export the "Display" from the solaris server to the linux workstation and also have the response time not be "slow", so I can see the window.

If anyone can recommend the best way to do this or point me in the right direction, that would be great!

TIA,
Bill

Not sure I fully understand what you're trying to do -- you want to export the solaris screen to be visible on the fedora workstation?

What I've done is use VNC servers on the solaris machines, and use a vncviewer on linux machnes.

I've noticed the "remote" desktop on linux sometimes is very slow....

That is exactly what I want to do...and...we are using vncviewer on XP workstations now, and, it is slow for us too.

Bottom line....I am trying to find an inexpensive (read free!) remote desktop software to export the full display from the Solaris server to XP and Fedora workstations.

Or, an easy and inexpensive (free!) X client or X server to connect via X windows.

So, any recommendations would be great..

TIA,
Bill

Well, have you tried actually using XDMCP?
Sounds to me like you've worked hard to set up the FC5 box to allow _other hosts_ to "remotely log on" and get a session on it... Which is kind of backwards, if I read you right.

On the FC5, just try something like (this kind of needs the CDE/dtlogin on the solaris end be set to allow remote logins:-):
X :6 -query <name or IP of the solaris box>

I used display number 6 just becasue it wasn't 0 (local display) or 1 (usually occupied by a vnc server). Any unused display number will do. One can specify a free virtual terminal too, but if not specified... it'll just grab the first free one (probably vt08). Some cr*p graphics adapters will not handle more than one local X server, so if you have one of those, you need stop X and run that command from a console login.

Anyway, that would land you with a remote CDE session, where all applications execute on the solaris box and render on the FC5.
Responsiveness will largely be dependant on the network, somewhat akin to the situation with VNC, so... YMMV.

Thanks Glenn.

And after further review, you are right.....it seems to me that I did the config bass akwards!

I did the command as stated in your post: X :6 -query <ip of solaris server>.....I only got a black screen.

But this opens up even more questions....

1. I did a netstat -an on the solaris server - it's not listening on port 7100. But it is listening on 6000
2. Do I need to specifiy my IP in the X -query command?
3. Now I am kinda lost.........so more info would be good at this point!

TIA,
Bill

Ok, XDMCP uses port 177/udp for the initial setup, and will then be using port 600X/tcp. The "direction" is that the client opens port 177 and chatters a bit with the server (solaris box in your case), which will then use port 600X (where X == the display number) to communicate back to the X server process.
This means that any intervening firewall need allow those ports. A good read at this point might be http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/XDMCP-HOWTO/procedure.html (the XDMCP HOWTO), just to get a feel for what's really involved.
The likely effect you are seeing is either one of
1) The FC5 box denying access to TCP port 6006, or
2) Your graphics adapter having a spot of problem handling the second X server, or
3) Something perhaps not allowing things on the solaris end.

Just use NX from http://www.nomachine.com/.  It will do what you want, but you have to install software on both server and client.  It's faster than X tunneling through ssh.

Or, do "ssh -X user@server" and then you can run stuff like xterm from the remote side and see it locally.

For windows, you can use cygwin/X, I think it works great.

But the fastest is probably NX, I think it's free if you only use one license.

All three suggestions (well, four actually:-) can be used for full desktop access from the FC5 to solaris. Split it any way you like:-)
