Qt apps display squares intead of font. Locale error message is only clue...

I'm having Qt font problems associated with my X deployment on my embedded target. Can someone with Qt and/or X font support expertise help me out?

I'm trying to run some Qt apps on a linux target following cross-compile. I have elminated my host tools as source of problem, but when I run the apps on my target's Xserver All I see is squares where I should see fonts, and my only clue is, "Qt: Locales not supported on X server".

I've been groping online for some succinct explanation of configuring the Xserver to support "locales", hoping that this is the root of my problem. However, I am finding very little useful information. I'm not a font expert.

1) Is it likely that this "Locale" error message is producing my problem?
2) If so, how to I configure this "locale" support for the Xserver?
