xterm Xt error: Can't open display

Can't open Xterm when connecting remotely to server via Putty... getting this error..."xterm Xt error: Can't open display:..."

Any ideas what could be wrong? I set my DISPLAY variable to my local_ip and local_computer_name but neither worked.. I also ran xhost + server_ip and it didn't work.

Please tell us what Xserver you are using - putty itself does not support Xwindows.

Using Cygwin/X

When I start Cygwin/X, I get a local xterm started which is running a shell on my pc - then I telnet to the remote machine and run "export DISPLAY=<my ip>:0". Then I run "xhost +" to allow clients from any host and then run "xclock" and it displays. Please respond with the steps you perform.
