Question

How do I remotely authenticate to a new domain?

Asked by: electrophreak123

I telecommute via Windows XP Pro laptop and just recently my company installed a new domain and they want to remove old one.  My current laptop profile was created on the old domain.

Question is how can I remotely authenticate to this new domain so the company can do away with the old domain?  There are several of us with this issue.

The company want us to Overnight the laptop to them so they can plug it into the network, login to the new domain, then overnight the laptop back to us.   There has to be a better way...

I can currently access both networks via a Cisco VPN client.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

You cannot do this remotely.  Send it in.

Hmm

this is a little different that what I have done.

But, if you connect to the vpn for new domain... while logged onto the old profile.

try and find something you can do the "runas" like word or exce. (right click on word while holding shift, choose runas)

then force the domain like so

domainname\username

This will cache the credenal for that user so you can logon to xp with it.

This assumes you can join the new domain via VPN to new domain.  I be surprised you cant do this as I thought I have done it before.

You can also use the use dial up option when logging onto windows.  Then choose the vpn.  This will connect the vpn before logging onto windows and should allow you to authenticate with the new domain once you belong to it.

If you use your laptop remotely 100% of the time, you won't need the "old" domain.  They can shut it down, and your cached account will still work locally on your laptop.  When you connect to the "new" domain via the VPN, you will use your credentials from the "new" domain.

Is there any reason why this wouldn't work?

Cheers,

Here's what the problem you are facing. Assuming your laptop is a member of the old domain to start with. The account you have been using belongs to the old domain and therefore your local profile on your laptop is created with the old domain account user SID. Now your company wants you to send in the laptop so that they can disjoin your computer off the old domain then join the new domain and logon with the new domain user account to have a new profile. The reason your company wants you to send in the laptop because they don't have a way for them to disjoin and join your computer to the new domain remotely.

You have two options here:
1. send in your laptop
2. Ask your company's IT  to disjoin and join your computer to the new domain remotely.

#2 above can be done:
Here's the process how this can be done by your IT Administrator(have them tested first and get familiar with the process before working on your machine so that you don't ended sending the laptop back):
a. While you are logged on as usuall and connected to the VPN. Your IT Administrator should be able to remote control to your laptop either by SMS, pcAnywhere, dameware, rdp etc. Just make sure they connect to your machine by local account and not a domain account.
b. Have your IT Administrator connect to your laptop remotely and have them log you off and logon with their admin account(they can either logon with a local account or domain account). Make sure they use a local admin account to logon on(if they don't have one, have them create one while still connected to the VPN and test it, again while stay connected to the VPN.) [Have them create a local account for you too in case the did follow or test the process throughly enough and need you to logon without sharing admin password with you.]
c.Test and make sure both your local account and the local admin account can connect to the VPN and logon to the laptop. It should work as the VPN client is independent of the Windows account. Note: Connecting to the VPN client required a separate account in the VPN database plus the pin/passcode.
e. Lets say you logon with either your domain or local user account and connect to the VPN for your IT Administrator. You can ask your Administrator to remote control your laptop and disjoin your computer off the old domain and join it to the new domain. Then reboot.
e. At the logon windows after the reboot, do not provide your new domain logon as you have not logged on and no local profile exist and therefore you cannot use the new domain user credential. You need to provide your previous working local profile to logon to Windows. Once you are connected to the Windows load VPN client and connect to your company's netowork. Then logoff, not reboot. Now try to logon with your new Domain account, make sure to select your new domain. This time will authenticated you as your VPN client has already established before you logoff. Once new domain user account authenticated, you will eventually have a new profile create for you new domain account upon your next logoff or reboot.

Some steps can be eliminated if your IT adminstrator can give you admin rights. Also, in order for the above to work, it required some works and test by your IT

Your IT may decide not to pursue such process but it can be done without sending your laptop back.
I have validated this process and will work.
