The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Dual Monitors w/ XDMCP to Solaris 2.6 machine doesn't redraw properly sometimes

Asked by Kumba42 in X-Windows Window Manager, Sun Solaris

Got a curious, but minor oddity popping up on a rather archaic setup I maintain.  I'm using a Linux Thin Client based off of Debian Lenny (5.0.2), and using it to connect via XDMCP to a Solaris 2.6 system.  The thin client has dual-monitors, one DVI and one VGA, using the radeonhd Xorg driver (gfx card is a Radeon HD X1250).

Sporadically, when working in CDE via this thin client, if you have a window open in say, the right-hand monitor, and you do some kind of window operation, such as resizing, opening/closing a menu on the toolbar, and so on, on the left-hand monitor, a "hole" will appear that slices through any underlying windows all the way to the CDE background image.  The "hole" will follow the top-most window no matter where you drag it, and will only go away when you minimize and then maximize the affected window, forcing a total redraw of the screen.

It's not anything that's a real bother, but I'm a bit stumped as to which side of the hardware configuration could be to blame.  The antiquity of CDE and OpenWin on Solaris 2.6, or the dual-headedness of the thin client, or a strange combination of the two using XDMCP?  Figured someone here might have an idea.  It's probably just an option that I'm missing on either the thin client's xorg.conf or the OpenWin config on Solaris 2.6.  The tricky part is which option...

Also, I'm well aware of the security implications of using XDMCP.  We're working on a solution that involves switching to SSH and other more secure measures, but that all is still in testing.  Until that's ready, XDMCP is all I have for now.

Thanks!
