Question

NX on Ubuntu Cannot open display

If I try to run a program from the shell in an NX session, I get
No protocol specified
cannot open display:

Locally, the $DISPLAY is :0.0, and I can use this - e.g.
$  nautilus --display=:0.0

Though it works anyway without the extra parameter

In the NX session,
$  echo $DISPLAY
:1147.0

but
$ nautilus --display=:1147:0
No protocol specified
cannot open display: :1147.0

I suspect I'm simply misunderstanding how this works.  Can anyone put me straight?

I don't know much about ubuntu (actually nothing) but if it's anything like XTERM, I'd try setting your display to the IP address of your local client machine.  i.e. export DISPLAY=192.72.56.100:0.0 or export DISPLAY=clientname:0.0.  It's worth a try and it will only take a minute.

Not for the first time, I was fooled by the error message!  It was an xhost issue - thanks for the solution.
