The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problem running VMWare ESX 3 inside of Workstation 6

Asked by dladowitz in VMware

Tags: , , ,

I have installed VMWare Workstation 6.02 on a Windows 2003 r2 64-bit server. It has an AMD 4200 x2 Althon and AMD-V extensions turned on inside the bios. 6GB RAM. Inside of Workstation 6 I have installed VMWare ESX 3.02 and OpenFiler as virtual machines. This all works fine if I install a 32-bit OS as a virtual machine inside of ESX. When I try to install a 64-bit OS like Win 2003 64-bit or Ubuntu 7.1 64-bit the ESX Virtual Machine crashes. I get the following errors on Workstation 6:

You are running a 64-bit guest operating system, but the virtual machine is configured to run a 32-bit operating system. To ensure that a 64-bit guest operating system will function correctly you must:
1. Power off this virtual machine. Power off this virtual machine.
2. Change the guest operating system type to a 64-bit operating system in virtual machine settings." Change the guest operating system type to a 64-bit operating system in virtual machine settings.

I installed ESX as Red Hat Linux. I've Tried changing it to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 64bit and Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5 64bit. 3 won't load and 5 show's the same crashing.

I can install Ubuntu 7.1 64-bit as a Virtual Machine inside Workstation 6 and it seems to be fine. Again, I can install any 32bit OS as a Virtual Machine inside of ESX

One other thing I notice is that on the Win2003 64bit that hosts Workstation 6, the install of Workstation 6 seems to be a 32bit app. The download of Workstation 6 from VMware's site list the app as both 32 and 64bit in the same file "Workstation for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit" Though when I open taskmanager and look at the processes all the ones associated with VMware have an *32 next to them. Also there normal 'Program Files' folder and another 'Program Files (x86)' where Workstation 6 is installed to. I beleive these are all 32bit apps.

It seems like if Workstation6 is installed on a 64bit OS and I can install 64bit Virtual Machines into Workstation 6 I should be able to install 64bit Virtual Machines into the ESX Virtual Machine.

I am a Windows Sys Admin and just getting into VMWare.
thanks for the help.
