VMWare guest machine bridged network disconnected error "Overlapped I/O operation in progress"

Asked by scotru in VMware, Miscellaneous Networking, Windows 2003 Server

Recently installed a VMWare guest operating system (XP Pro SP2) on a host running Windows 2003 Server SBE.  The host is an "all-in-one" server that is also the internet gateway.

Orignally VMWare bridged the guest networking to the WAN (internet) NIC in the host.  This gave me Internet, but I could not join the domain with the guest OS since I was on the WAN side.  I changed the network settings in VMWare to bridge to the other (internal) NIC.  I was then able to join the domain, but could not get Internet access.  I could ping the host's IP, (and could resolve DNS since the host is the DNS server), but could not ping anything outside the local network .

My goal was to be on the local network (192.168.100.x) but also have outside (internet) access through the hosts firewalled gateway, just as if my virtual machine was an internal domain member.

After playing with the VMWare network manager a bit, I now have no network access at all in the VMWare guest (and I thought I'd put everything back to how it was originally).  The little network icon has a red x in the VMWare console and when I try to "connect" it gives the error message:

VMnet0: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress
Failed to connect virtual device Ethernet0.

Can anyone help?
a)  Get my network connection in the VMWare guest working again.
b)  Help me achieve my original goal of getting the VMWare guest to behave as an internal domain member with outside Internet access through the host gateway.

Thanks a bunch!
