The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

ESX 3.5 will not reboot

Asked by jondrejik in VMware

This is my first try with ESX and I can't figure out what is going on.   I have Dell PE1800 with a SCSI controller for the Tape Drive and a CERC 6 Channel raid card.   There are two 250GB HD in the system.   This system is being repurposes so I know it was working.

I entered CERC raid config program during startup and deleted the current raid.  I reset the raid back to Raid 5 and initialized the disks.   The Adaptec tool shows the raid as successfully rebuilding.   I then exit the tool and reboot the server to the ESX install.  I follow the GUI based install.   It recognizes the CERC HDs as the boot disk and asks to install there.   I get a pop-up about having to delete the current volumes and I allow this to happen.   The install goes fine and completes.   At the end of the install a reboot is required.   As soon as the SCSCI text is on the screen the system starts to alert.   The boot process stops after the CERC portion with no HD available.

Try 2 - Follow same procedure but this time let the system in the RAID config screen until the RAID 5 is rebuilt and listed as optimal.   Complete the ESX install process and reboot.  The reboot gets further but starts alerting and stops showing anything on the screen afte showing this errorr.... SCSI disk error:  Host 4, Channel 0, ID 0, LUN 0 Return Code = 80000002.   This is shown multiple times.

Figure there is something wrong so redo everything and install W2K3 server.  No alerts no issues.

I've been working at this for 2 days now and can't get ESX to work on the reboot.  If it does come up and I can get to the mgt URL the alert buzzer is on continuously.   If I reboot after being able to login to the mgt URL the system stops and can't get to the login screen again.

What am I doing wrong?   Is the ESX install somehow erasing the RAID info on the disk?

Attaching a jpg of the ESX screen.

Help with any thoughts on how to get ESX installed is greatly appreciated.Start Free Trial
