asked on

java is not installing

BACKGROUND:

    currently, i have three bootable partitions on the 60GB HD of my laptop.. each are aroud 10GB and i have a
4th partition that is 1.052GB swap so i haven't even allocated all my disk space to partitions. the fact i have unused
space may not be relevant.   my boot manager looks like this:

    F1: FreeBSD
    F2: FreeBSD
    F3: FreeBSD
    F4:  ??

  F1 and F2 are bootable, to 6.0 and 5.4 respectively, with xfce4, while F4 is an operational NTFS running Win2Kpro from
"uncle bill" as i like to say it.  F3 is the afforementioned swap partition used by both F1 and F2.

my friend rudy who runs an ISP helped me set up F1 and F2,  we set up F1, then i found out i couldn't run MICO, "MICO is CORBA,"
and i need to  utilize, it, as well as java for a course in the fall.  since 6.0 is not stable, that's why F2 got created.  i managed
to install F2, but rudy fixed my DHCP so i can get a wire.  also rudy made my xfce on both F1 and F2.

i started with this background, so it will be more clear to anyone reading this, what the heart of the problem is.   when
you press "F1" at startup, the ad0s1a partition is mounted on "/" while the ad0s2a partition is mounted on "/stable"
meanwhile, if you press "F2" at startup, the ad0s2a partition is mounted on "/" while the ad0s1a partition is mounted
on "/mnt-for-6.x"  one day rudy made some links "ln" i still get confused whether they would be "-s" or "-h" (if "-h" is really
"hard")

   1)  /home/kayve   only exists in one place.. i guess in ad0s1a
    2)  same is true for /usr/ports maybe?  and probably crucial java directories

   when booted up on F1, my prompt is two lines :

                       Path: /home/kayve
                       (kayve@www) 104>

    here is what it looks like when i su to root:

                       Path: /home/kayve
                      (kayve@www) 104> su
                      Password:
                       bind: Command not found.
                       Path: /home/kayve
                       (root@www) 101>

  meanwhile, i ferget what the F2 prompt looks like but the root prompt looks like this:

                        kayvetop#

  now.. here is some stuff that was happening trying to install java...

     kayvetop# pwd
   /mnt-for-6.x/usr/ports/java

   ../distfile: No such file or directory.
   kayvetop# cd ../distfiles

   cp: ./bsd-jdk14-patches-7.tar.gz and
   /mnt-for-6.x/usr/ports/distfiles/bsd-jdk14-patches-7.tar.gz are identical
   (not copied).
   kayvetop# pwd

right now i am logged onto F1   note that part of the path is the pwd, but i ran that command to make it 100% clear

Path: /home/kayve/src
(root@www) 111> ls j2*
j2eesdk-1_4_02_2005Q2-linux.bin         j2sdk-1_4_2-mozilla_headers-unix.zip
j2eesdk-1_4_02_2005Q2-solaris-i586.bin  j2sdk-1_4_2-src-scsl.zip
j2sdk-1_4_2-bin-scsl.zip                j2sdk-1_4_2_08-linux-i586.bin

j2sdk1.4.2_08:
.systemPrefs
Path: /home/kayve/src
 (root@www) 112> pwd
/usr/home/kayve/src
Path: /home/kayve/src
(root@www) 113>

maybe those files aren't relevant.. umm.. i thought i followed some directions somewhere directed by somebody..

::sigh::

maybe i need to look over those notes somewhere.. but actually i decided to create this new thread because anyway
the above error sort have had me baffled a while back when i was trying to focus  on this problem.

right now i am writing php and doing this was sort of a procrastination from that  {:P

when i said "part of the path is the pwd" i meant "part of the PROMPT is the pwd"

You have to fetch all java components by hand due to licensing, and remeber that it is 30-day trial

cd /usr/ports/whatever/jdkwhatever
# make checksum
STOP somewhere
Please fetch "some file" from http://wherever accepting licence or registering etc

# lynx "http://wherever"
etc etc...

see now, that was really stupid of me..

but that's why yer here!  thanks!  i have never owned a unix puter before in my life.  i have 15 years
experience logging onto unix systems, but over that time, the preponderance of which i haven't even
always had a puter of my own.
i call myself a "computational nomad" for the way i just use portals to unix systems on which i am
a mere luser.

man i must be a mess!  it's still freeking cleaning!
cd /usr/ports/java/jdk14
make clean
make install
<here it asks you to fetch linux jdk and bsd jdk+patches>
whenever you get files in /usr/ports/distfiles
redo make clean and make install until you succeed
when it tells there is checksum error - delete mentioned file from /usr/ports/distfiles and fetch it again.
it takes really very much time.

if it asks for non-latest jdk fileset, go to http://java.sun.com/products/archive/, they all are there

do not worry about being nomad in computing, everyone here once were.

umm.. you want me to kill the command  "make clean; make; make install clean"
under /usr/ports/java

i think i'll follow yer instructions right now in another winder..

hmmg.. might not be good to have these going concurrently?

oh well.. i'm a loose cannon.

the /usr/ports/java command above seems like it is only on the first "make clean" and it think it has been going for about two hours
now.

yes, java 1.5 is bleeding edge. make clean can take time, depending on how many things it has to clean up after. The java port is fairly hefty and it does have a lot of work to do.

woopsiedoodle kill and start over in jdk14 only?  or make clean in /usr/ports/java first?

what is the differential ratio for how long it will take?  twice as long?  three times?  does it matter

more things running == more things eating up resources that your computer could be using for the compile (memory, cpu, etc).

$ xset fp+ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW
$ xset fp rehash

or by adding it to your X-server configuration file (usually
/etc/X11/XF86Config) and restarting the X-server.

You can use gnu screen to avoud starring at scrolling text.
It is in /usr/ports/misc/screen

first you run it with screen command
than type Ctrl-A D
and it hides
and screen -r gets it back.

And besades taking all of your disk space and , an jdk build takes all of your memory, and because of licencing, it is not presented as ready-to-install package.

umm.. i don't know if i understood that, but now that it is on the "cleaning" stage it must
be in "make clean,"  right?

ng for fontconfig-2.2.3,1
===>  Cleaning for linux-fontconfig-2.1_2
===>  Cleaning for urwfonts-1.0
===>  Cleaning for open-motif-2.2.3_2
===>  Cleaning for linux-XFree86-libs-4.3.99.902_2
===>  Cleaning for xorg-libraries-6.8.2
===>  Cleaning for jdk-1.4.2p7_1

therefore, it should be a lot safer to kill it now than before make clean.

is this cleaning stage going to take another 5 hours now?  or will it probably be done soon?
Yeah it gone well
pkg_info | grep ^jdk
will make you very happy.

heh  {:} should there be more than that for 8 hours build??
Probably, maybe becaues your X ate some RAM.
Please next time do tell in one post that "it produces lots of output"
And post it if some is really interested in it.
no, that's about it. If you have other FreeBSD machines, you can transfer the pkg to them and add it with pkg_add (assuming you're using same architecture (x86, probably) on all of the machines).
