The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

apache saying "[warn]  NameVirtualHost training:80 has no VirtualHosts"

Tags: namevirtualhost, has, virtualhosts
Hi experts,

I keep getting the following message (this is an example): Forcing reload of web server: Apache2[Wed Sep 14 13:38:48 2005] [warn] NameVirtualHost training:80 has no VirtualHosts

Here is the relevant section from my .conf file.

NameVirtualHost pto:80
<VirtualHost pto:80>
   servername pto
   serverPath /nd/pto
   DocumentRoot /nd/pto
</VirtualHost>

NameVirtualHost training:80
<VirtualHost training:80>
   servername training
   serverPath /nd/docs/Training
   DocumentRoot /nd/docs/Training
</VirtualHost>

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I'm trying to let employees access sections of our website by just typing "training" or "pto" in the address bar of the browser. I'm using a BIND9 server, which *is* correctly configured with training and pto CNAMEs.

I am running Apache2 on debian Sarge.

Try to do this:

NameVirtualHost *:80
<VirtualHost *:80>
   servername pto
   serverPath /nd/pto
   DocumentRoot /nd/pto
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost *:80>
   servername training
   serverPath /nd/docs/Training
   DocumentRoot /nd/docs/Training
</VirtualHost>

slyong , what this above is about to do? Define two default hosts ?

author, I assume that pto and training addresses are different IPs, that why apache prints that warning.
It's about that You defined NameVirtualHost training:80 but only one virtualhost is defined for the IP of training, so there is no need for NameVirtualHosts.
You don't have to worry, as it's only warning.

No ravenpl,

Name based virtual hosting just need that.  You are running NameVirtualHost on any IP at port 80.  The name of the virtual host is defined in "servername".

do training and pto resolve to different IPs?
you always better use IPs or * for the NameVirtualHost  and <VirtualHost> directives

thanks all for you comments. ravenpl appears to be correct, because the sites are working as planned, but to answer ahoffmann, there is only one ip address. So, while I am receiving error messages, the sites are working correctly. Any ideas why?

1) NameVirtualHost: You should really only have one if you have 1 IP.  Use:
NameVirtualHost *:80
or
NameVirtualHost 123.123.123.123:80 like what ahoffmann said.

2) <VirtualHost training:80>: again, you should really use IP instead of machine names.

>  there is only one ip address.
then training and pto resolve to the same IP?
Then your apache configuration is wrong (see my and slyong's comment), use IPs there
