Changing the zone time in a RED HAT Linux 7.0 server
Hello everyone,
I am trying to set the correct time zone in my linux server via ssh. I try this line of code ( ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/"our time zone" /etc/localtime) but since I am not an expert, I do not know how to make it work. I logged into my account via ssh and typed the code above. My terminal window highlights the locatime file in red and starts flashing. I am using ssh in a Mac OS X 10.3.2. Would some one please help. I need to know how to make the code work. Thank you.

RedHat 7.0 is fairly old... You wouldn't have the redhat-config-* tools at all. You do have the textmode/newt tool "timeconfig" though, so just run that. Be sure to remove the erroneous symbolic link first though ("rm /etc/localtime")... It'll be replaced by timeconfig anyway... It doesn't use symbolic links but rather copies the relevant file over, so this is why it might be a good idea not to have it as a dangling symlink.
Using timeconfig also has the added bonus of keeping /etc/sysconfig/clock in sync with the timezone file.

Thanks to everyone that answered my question. Glenn Thanks you for replying. I tried what you told me but I do not seem to have the timeconfig command ( I think ). I logged in as the root and typed timeconfig and the shell tells me that the command does not exists. What am I doing wrong? thanks in advance guys.

Thanks I figured it out. ln -s/usr/share/zoneinfo/Amer ica/"a_cit y_in_your_ time_zone" /etc/localtime. This works fine. The code above works for time in America.
you can do that in
redhat-config-date
redhat-config-time
or in in command promt with
tzfile (5) - time zone information
tzselect (8) - select a time zone
zdump (8) - time zone dumper
zic (8) - time zone compiler
