asked on
which distro to try?
I want to use a modern distro, my criterias are:
1- Built for idiots. The meaning is (among other things) that there is a supporting community (say, on IRC) where I can ask for help
2- GOOD support for PPTP. On Mandriva (for example) I bumped into problems and it seems most modern distros don't really care about PPTP anymore. No, I won't reconfigure my modem to PPPoE
thanks

I don't know that a live CD will really help you... You have to configure your hardware, which is typically detected at installation time. When booting, it requires to know what the hardware is to bring it up properly.

Do I have to download the whole 5 disks pack or will the netinstall disk do the job?
The advantage to the netinstall CD is not having to download large ISO's and burn CD's. The disadvantage is that it will take a long time to install the system, and a re-install will take just as long. Personally, I don't like the netinstall option as it has failed on me during the installation phase and I've had to start again...
If you download the ISO's, you should not need disc 5. What you can try is this:
Download and burn CD1. Start the download for CD2. Start the installation process on your machine. When it gets to the point where it's actually installing software, look at the list of CD's it needs. This will tell you exactly which ones you require to get the installation done.
If you install and want to keep the distro, download the remaning ISO's so you have a complete set for future.
One other thing: my comment about a live CD not meeting your needs was also partly because not all software is available on the demo's. It's possible that you won't have everything you require at your disposal. PPTP is supported in my firewall, which is SuSE Pro 9.0, so you should have everything you need in 9.3.
