Accessing secure sites via Exporer

I have OS 10.1 and I am using Internet Explorer. Since doing an upgrade or some download, I cannot access any sites that require a secure password, such as eBay, Hotmail, internet banking...browser shows: "connecting to proxy" in status bar, it hangs for about 30secs and comes up with connection failure. Interesting thing is that I have no problems in accessing those sites while using IE 5.1 through "Classical Environment".

I tried many things, including downloading a newest version of IE 5.2 for Mac, but it didn't work. My cookies are enabled and all other sites are accessible.

No, I am not, I have a normal modem connection
Have you tried Netscape, Opera, iCab, Mozilla etc? Do they work?
If you are not using AOL as an ISP.

Open up your system preferences and click on the icon for network.  Toggle the Show: pulldown to Built-in Modem or whichever modem you are using.  Then click on the tab labled Proxies.  Remove all checks and information you may have in there.  Click the apply now button.  Log out and then back in or restart (your choice).  Try it now.  If it still dosen't work please tell us what ISP you use.
Thanks very much for your comment, three days ago I tried exactly what you specified here, but in Explorer's preferences. In Security Settings, I unticked Security Proxy and that was it.
Thanks to everyone for input.

You may want to check your internet control panel too, as well as the location manager control panel or whatever that's called in OS X....

IE5 is location manager aware and changes its proxy settings according to the internet and location manager control panels....

Good luck,
Rogier.
Close but no Cigar...  I guess 50 Points would be nice...  Then again I may end up with a grade less than A...
