"... But I didn't want to burn these files to CD"

OK, so I return to my PC only to find that someone had (why I'll never know) performed a "drag-n-drop" of a root directory onto my CD Burners drive icon...

Problem this is my home PC and I run XP Home edition.

Now I'm continually reminded (nagged) that I have files waiting to be burned to CD.  I cant delete them (either directly or using the "delete temporary files" to get rid of them because it attempts to delete the source files!

I can't burn them because it would take waaaay too many CDs.

Anybody know of a "simple" way to trash such a huge CD burning job without nuking my "My Documents" and "Program Files" directories?  I'm sure there's gotta be a shortcut for this...

Thanx

this may help
To facilitate CD recording, Windows XP uses a staging area to store the data for recording, which is located in the following hidden folder:
Drive_letter :\Documents and Settings\ username \Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning
In addition, the information in the staging area is copied to a monolithic discimage file before you record the data. By default, this file is named StashImapi.bin and is located in the root folder. You can change the location of the file in the CD recorder Properties dialog box.
find this file and rename it to stashimapi.old
and if your machine exibits no problems, delete it

stevenlewis,

Thanks for the assist, unfortunately, I found no files in :\Documents and Settings\ username \Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning, (not even hidden ones).  And a file search yeilded no "StashImapi.bin" either.

Is it possible that, due to the size of the job, XP has some alternate method to "pre-stage"?  Perhaps I can "disconnect" this job through some registry setting? (I was hoping not to have go there, but this is really annoying to me....
In explorer, highlight the cdrw drive, click on files, and the option to delete temporary files should be there.
It shouldn't delete the wource files, just the temp files. You can also try moving them back to where they were, and say yes to overwrite. or use system restore, and restore to a point before this happened
also in explorer, do you have show hidden files checked and uncheck hide system files, in the tools folder options?

Stevenlewis,

Whenever I try to delete the temporary files waiting to be written to CD, it fails because the job includes the recycle bin, program files and other system folders.  So that won't work.

It does delete the source files, the smaller non-system directories vanish from the source drive if I delete them from the cdrw drive.

and yes, I have "show hidden files and folders" selected in the options...

did I mention how annoying this is?

thanks again

max
Is there a System Restore Point before this happened? If so you might try reverting back to that time and see if stops.
zuf, I mentioned system restore, but it's good to have a reminder
Sorry stevenlewis. I missed your comment on system restore. I take it back. maxmars, Do you use XP's copy to CD function or do you have other software you use for burning your cd's? I suppose if you don't need it you can disable it. At least that would stop it from nagging you to complete the burn. I don't know but it might clear the waiting files too. Not sure on that. Maybe disable it and reboot. Then enable it again and see what happens.

I stumbled on to the "deactivate" feature, which (as zuf50 said) stopped the annoying reminders.  But of course I used the XP feature quite a bit (abd I'd like to keep using it - if possible).  Now I'm not sure about how difficult this problem really is... Shouldn't there be some registry-resident entries I cant edit?

Anyway, I'm "upping the ante" so to speak... let's see if anyone has ever had this problem... or is it reserved for me alone  ;)

Saw this advice in a post about deleting files that would not allow deleting. Might work for you. Right click on the file you are trying to delete, choose properties, advanced, and UNCHECK the box that says for fast searching, allow index service to index this file. then hit ok, apply, then delete the file.
try this
open the registry and go to
[ H K E Y _ C U R R E N T _ U S E R \ S o f t w a r e \ M i c r o s o f t \ W i n d o w s \ C u r r e n t V e r s i o n \ E x p l o r e r \ C D   B u r n i n g ]
fnd the drive and change the value to 3
reboot a couple of times, then go back and change it to what it is now (2)?

Esteemed Experts,

Sigh,

So far I have not been able to defeat this problem.  There are no files which I really want to delete per se.  I tried the registry tweak with no results (no good ones anyway).  In fact, after each reboot, the drive type reverts from 3 to 2.   I have temporarily disable the CD writing function in XP, but that's not really a solution.  Any other ideas?

maxmars
other than the system restore option which I mentioned earlier, I'm out of ideas
or buy a mess of cd's and have at it (poor attempt at humor)
Do you have a copy of Norton Ghost? You could make an image of your C drive. Then use the ghost editor to delete the files in C:\Documents and Settings\BOB\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning from the image and then install the image back to your C drive. Kind of a roundabout way but it would work.

This is a first!  I've never before had a problem that this gaggle of experts couldn't overcome.  In a strange way, it's sort of cool!

Anyway, I guess I'll have to keep the feature deactivated in windows until I can come up with a boat load of CD's (yuk).

Sorry zuf50, I don't use Norton Ghost.

I don't know how long I should keep the question open.  Do you think there might be other takers out there?  I'd hate to think these 300 Points are going to some black hole in the exchange....
one other suggestion, copy all the info in your docs and setting folders to another location on the drive, nuke it by deleteing the cd files, and then copy the info back
you can also use the doc and settings transfer wizard to copy them to another location, and copy them back
I know stevenlewis suggested transfering or moving the files so I'm not offering this as a fix, just a comment on that idea. I did a small test on my XP. I dragged the windows folder to my CD writer. Just like in your case I couldn't delete the folder. I tried to copy and paste and the send to but it would stop with access denied when it hit system files. I did find I could cut and paste the folder to another location on my hard drive. That doesn't get rid of the files but at least it would open up your cd to other burning for you. Not sure in your case but cut and paste worked for me to at least move them.

Experts,

The question has been rendered mute (is that spelled right?).  Due to an unfortunate (and total) OS meltdown, I ended up reformatting and reinstalling the whole kit and caboodle.  Needless to say this problem is gone, gone, gone.

I hope we can determine some solutions for anyone unlucky enough to have to go through this kind of problem in the future.

Thank you again for all your attempts at helping me.

In my opinion the best thing for people to do is to have a backup somewhere. Use one of the utilities like drive image or ghost to make an image of your drive and when something happens you can restore the image and be back up in 20 minutes.

ITsheresomewhere,

Actually, I didn't forget, I was just not sure how to put an end to the question - so to speak.

If possible, I accept you're suggestion.

Thanks
