Windows 2000 - Error Before Log on Window - Services Manager Error

Ok, my turn to ask for help now

I have a user based on a Win2k desktop. Boots up to the point just before the windows logon screen appears (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and gets a small window open saying (abreviated)

c:\winnt\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectidely with error status 128 - installed by NT authority system

Seems like the services host is screwed. Tried going into Safe Mode but get a svchost.exe general error and it will be closed down. It then takes an age to get into safe mode but I cannot view any of the event log errors (probably due to a service that it requires not running because of the services error)

Tried last known good config aswell, still no hope. Last option is a system restore from Win2k CD but due to us having a hybrid version of Win2k (built to accomodate the company) this can sometimes have worse effect on other software.

Does anyone have

A) A Reason behind the error and why it happend (as usual MS Support in the web is like a chocolate kettle)

B) Solution that possibly does not require the restore (taking into account that we cannot copy a new services.exe file in as it is NTFS partitioned)

I'll give all the points or share them according to the answers I get for the 2 sections of this problem

I would definately attempt the repair console first. If that doesn't work then a full repair may do the trick.

Problem is the Win2k install is not a virgin one. As a company we turn it into a hybrid format to suit our security and working systems (auto download utils, auto admin, remote admin etc) The repair console we have found replaces some of the structure as it sees it as being invalid. Any other ideas ? I'll check out that NTFS disk, if that works then the points will go to you Sys !
Hi,

This seems quite easy problem.Microsoft Suggest if you are getting problem at the logon screen like spoole file is currupt,or any service related the best way is just igrone the screen adn do you login if possible.

If you get the entry in win2k then best way to solve this problem is just apply the services pack like SP2 for win2k and restart your computer and see every thing will work fine.

the idea behind this is if you install service pack what eber data or any settings related to your machine is keep as it is and new patches are applied to your machine.I got this printer related error in my machine when i was testing win2k for error. This problem comes when your machine is having some problem with your hardware or software so just apply service pack.

OK, gonna restate this - We cannot log on to windows as the error occurs BEFORE the log on window. I have actually resolved the problem now though, I created a boot hard disk and did created a recovery program to pull all the settings across from the old hard disk inc. the users personnel files. Microsoft actually came back to me and this was basically the reply of the support member

"We would recommend you re-install SP2", I replied "but we cannot log on so how would we do this ?"
"We would recommend you re-build the system !"

So there you have it , Microsoft could no even resolve this one. Im going to give the points to Sysexpert as he answered first with the correct fix per a standard MS install of W2k (it is correct to run the consol to repair but we cant due to our build of W2k). Im not gonna grade it high though...you have tonnes of points anyway :)
There ya go
It's not SysExpert's fault you have a custom build of Windows 2K. Why penalize him?????
Because it would be unfair to give him full points ! I stated in the original text to the problem that we have a custom build and i was looking for a repair other than system console. Please read this again as then im sure you will understand. He still gets 300 points but I don't think it correct to give him an expert level on the call. Sure, he is 100% correct that repair console would work, but was not an option here. Im not sure how well you know EE so let me point out in no way was I penalising him. When you give points to someone you can set a level aswell regards how they answered the call. One of the levels is Expert which I think doubles the question points. I gave him the Good answer which I think adds some extra points on aswell. I would not take points away as that would be unprofessional ! Thankyou for your comment
John_Painter :
I'm glad I could contribute, and I think that the point issue is moot, as I have quite a few...

Cool, Thanks again
