Installing WinXP Upgrade on new HD
My hard drive (HD) on my laptop had a meltdown which I replaced with a new HD, and I want to upgrade with WinXP (XP) but I would like to do it with the "Upgrade" version of XP and not have to purchase the "Full Install" version. I have the full install version of Win95, which I purchased when I built my first computer and I have the upgrade version of Win98, which needed a previous version of windows in order to install it. I'm sure XP will need a previous version of windows to install it also.
My question is; is there a work-around to having to install Win95 and then upgrading to XP so that all I would have to do is create a windows directory on C: drive and adding a couple of files to it so that XP recognizes it as an upgrade.

Wakeup, Thanks for your quick reply.
I tried it with my win98 upgrade CD 1st before buying XP upgrade version;
At the point of verification, I put in the win95 CD and browsed to e:\win95 and it accepted it. Re-inserted the 98 upgrade CD and continued to load windows.

Bought XP and installed on clean HD, At the point of verification, I put in the win95 CD, didn't even have to browse, Re-inserted the XP upgrade CD and continued to load windows without any problems; except 1 minor detail that was not in documentation;
After XP setup is finished installing and restarts for the last time, it doesn't tell you to remove the CD, and you should not remove the CD. So when the computer restarts it comes up on the DOS like screen saying "pick any key to boot to CD"! Dah! "DO NOT PICK ANY KEY!!!!" If you do pick a key, XP starts the setup all over again from the beginning, you can escape out of it but then you get scary screens saying all kinds of bad things about the OS. So after the second time of running setup and it rebooted, Dah! I did not pick any key and XP started and finished setting up.
I remember back a few years ago, I had made a comment on this board about engineers; well, i definitely be 1 to! I mean too!!!
Wakeup, Thanks again for all your help.

then boot to the boot disk, make note of the letter assigned to your cd (usuall e:) and then from the prompt type
e:\i386\winnt.exe
where e: is the cd drive
you will be prompted for the w9x cd to verify the upgrade validation, but it will set up no problem
