asked on

hiberfil.sys AND pagefile.sys

I have those two files in the c: root.
I also use to have a lot of crashes in my XPpro, mostly because of IE.
Are those files safe to delete? Thanks in advance.

You wont be able to delete pagefile.sys while Windows is running. The file is in use. Outside of Windows you could possibly delete it provided the disk isn't NTFS and you boot with a DOS boot disk. If you did delete it though, chances are the system wouldn't boot afterwards, complaining about missing Paging files, or it might just recreate it. I cant remember which it is, but either way I wouldn't delete it.

Hiberfil.sys is the Hibernation file used to store the state of the PC when it last went into hibernation. If you delete it, it'll be ok, but will be created again on next hibernation. You could turn off hibernation though and it wont reappear.

OK, but both files have about 500Mb...and i dont hibernate the pc.
The pagefile.sys file you will need and cannot delete. Go ahead and delete the other one though if your short on disk space.

That's it, i have gone to the power options, and dont even need to delete hiberfil file, as it deletes it self. Thanks for the help.
If WinXP is crashing alot, check for updates, also make sure your running Service Pack 1 or higher (SP1 is the highest service pack at the time I said this)
as to the pagefile.sys
that is in use by the virtual memory if you have plenty of ram you can turnoff or atleast reduce the amount set aside
click start
right click my computer
click properties
click advanced (tab)
under performance click settings
click advanced (tab)under virtual memory click change
here you can change the space avaialable for each drive by choosing the custom button then entering the amount you want
or if ya got lots a ram choose the no paging file either way make sure to click the "set" button when your done

i run a full gig of ddr pc2100 and have had no probs running with the virtual memory turned off
it even seems to run a bit better maybe because it forces the system to use the ram and not the drives "virtual" ram , dont know though ?
thanks for the info on the hiberfil gonna go get rid of it right now
and dont forget
Roadkilltastesgood!!
Sorry roadkilltastesgood .
That fat file, appears first time after a crash, or a forced reboot.
hiberfil.sys i have delected, and everythings running ok. The other one, i'm afraid of it.
To Roadkilltastesgood & Paulo taborda:
as Roadkilltastesgood said, pagefile.sys is a virtual memory img file, the normal or default size is 1.5 times your phsical memory(eg, if your system memory is 512mb, then your pagefile.sys is about 756mb-758mb). and i don't think you can delete it, I tryed to disable the virtual memory in my system and it did delete the pagefile.sys, but the time you disable it is the time you reinstall your PC. and my pc got 1GB PC-800 Rambus which is much better then DDR Ram. The size of pagefile.sys i got is about 1.5gb under c:\. too big isn't it? so i use the other option. change the size of virtual memory (min is 2mb) everything is good for me now. that file doesn't boder at all, it doesn't make any difference aft i changed size of it, but got save 1.5gb of my HDD :P.
pagefile.sys  is teh space for your hard drive where virtual memory is stores.. like you ram, but on a hard drive. hiberfil.sys is the place where your had drive acts like "ram" whn you put your system to "hybernatoin" if you never put your comptuer to hybernation.. then you should disable it so the file would dissapear and release some space you.. to do that go to control panel>power options>and hybernatoin> and uncheck teh box that says enable hybernatoin.
Thanks grubygrub
It was the most complete anwser, but unfortunetly, out of time for the points...
That anwser was the one i was looking ...
Well - you have asked are they safe to delete, not what is their purpose.
zlatev you are right, but 'understanding is halfway to find the solution'
With the grubygrub anwser, i finally know why i should, or should not.
ahah well you can change the pagefile size too but the system usually configures teh defult for you system.. how you cahnge it depends on your system.. if you have enough ram and won't woprry about powerfailures, you can probably disable the pagefile if you relaly need more spce...
in XP go right clikc MY COMPTUER, then to ADVANCED TAB, under PERFORMANCE, click Settings.
then click Change. the you can change it or not use it..

dose any have any DEWU does?? or a dewu keygen.. can you send it to grubygrub@online.ie thanks =)

Follow up question if I may :

I was using running a new virus programme on a laptop which uses XP pro. I use this programme on my desktop which runs ME (still) and it has been great. It's called f-secure.

When I run it on the laptop it stops at hyberfil.sys and pagefile.sys and says it cannot scan
(according to the report) these files and has closed.

Any thoughts ? virus, other crap etc

thanks
As hyberfil.sys and pagefile.sys are system files, they are locked from the system, and no program can read/write them.
This is the reason F-secure fails on them.
I actually preffer other antivirus programs:
Commercial: Symantec/Norton; Panda
Non-commercial (free for home users): AVG

Kind Regards,
Zlatin

Hi. My name is Evgeniy.

My comment is: To delete the Hiberfil.sys you need to disable Advanced Power Settings under the Control Panel. My opinion that if you have not enough spase on your c: drive it going to be better move the pagefile.sys file from your root to another partiotion or HDD. Do not try to move by click copy/paste.To do so, go to the properties of your system (under the Control Panel) Advanced tab and select "change"  the properties of virtual memory
Relocate your pagefile.sys file. Set new value of the min and max size (recommended min: is 1.5 size of your RAM). Don't be affraid to do so. Because it will not effect until you reboot the system. You can change any settings back at any time before reboot.
Thank you. Good luck!

Notice that you do not add much to my comment that is accepted as answer.
Also this thread is from year of 2002, so I do not think it is good to keep it alive.
As above those are system files and can not be  deleted,
I set my PAgefile.sys to equal the same thing to keep from fragmentation
example 800/800

Use a tool like system works to detect and find problems
On my system, unchecking the hybernate box also removed the file.
If you are having problems because "pagefile too small or missing", you may have an old version of the Intel Application Accelerator installed.  Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.  Uninstall the Intel Application Accelerator.  Restart and your pagefile.sys should be restored.    You can set the size of the pagefile under System Properties (right-click on My Computer and select Properties) -> Advanced->Performance Settings->Advanced->Change Virtual Memory.
FYI, The registry key
Hkey_local_machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
and the following entry governs the size of the pagefile:
PagingFiles:Reg_Multi_SZ:C:\pagefile.sys 190 380
