Various ways are possible.

Most likely is that the Office product is on a network server and not local and to access it you must go to that domain.  The choice to do this was made on installation of the product.

With Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, a user must log on to the machine, with a valid username and password to use any application.  The username and password may be validated by the local machine, or the PC may be a member of a Domain and the users may be validated by an NT Server called a Domain Controller.

This general procedure, of having a domain controller control logins can be enforced on machines running Microsof Operating Systems, from Windows 95 forward to Windows XP and Windows 2000 Server.
