winlogon.exe is killing my cpu, what can I do? It's 3dsmax.......
A while after I start windows xp, winlogon.exe goes off the charts! Using aprox 80 percent of my cpu. Anyone knows why? Can't close it, cuz its a critical prosess....
Later, I've found out that it is 3ds max5(by installing and uninstalling) who's giving me all the trouble. Why is 3ds crashing with windows XP?
Tnx

If your Norton Antivirus it is most likely the cause. Try uninstalling NAV and rebooting your pc. If problem goes away, then reinstall NAV. What could have happened is another application that got install replaced a critical dll that NAV uses.

Is it just winlogon using processor time or is it the Spooler too? I guess you've looked at your 3rd party printer drivers, which are a common cause of high spooler and winlogon cpu usage .
Do you have an antivirus enabled on your machine ? Do a full scan to try to find any viruses. Try to disable and see what happens.
Did you have SP1 for XP installed ?
There are any error messages in event log ?
While you're looking for a fix, you could try Performance Manager from www.appsense.com. This allows you to clamp the amount of cpu and memory available to applications and users - if they stay above your specified limits for a certain length of time they are then clamped back to use less resources. In your case it might keep winlogon under control and get better performance from your servers.
You can grab an evaluation from the website, use code NE101JHW and if you provide feedback on your evaluation you can claim a free server copy of one product.
