IIS Server not working properly

I have Windows 2000 professional runnig on my home pc with IIS installed on it. But I cannot open any webpage on it. When I start Internet Service Management Console, it shows that IIS web service is running (on). But when I open Internet explorer and type url for homepage http://localhost or http://computername and press enter it shows error message as cannot find webpage. The page can be opened by doubleclicking which means internet explorer is working fine. When I checked out event log following error shows everytime I boot the computer in win2k. Can anybody guide me as to the cause of the problem and whether this is the reason why webserver doesn't show pages?

Eventlog System log errors:

category: none
company name: microsoft corporation
Event id: 105
File Version: 5.0.2182.1
Product Name; Intrnet Information services
Product version: 5.0.2182.1

same error for other services:

P.S. I have dual boot machine with win98 and win2k pro. I haven't installed any internet access service in win2k pro though I use dialup service on Win98.

have you set the directory of the iis storage to the location where your web pages are stored on the disk. this is done by properties of IIS and setting the source directory to the directory where your webpages which are to show are stored.
one of the html files among them should be index.htm or the specified names which are predefined in the properties of IIS so that it will show your homepage on typing localhost from the ie.
i have the same problem before, and i remember that it appears i delete the folder that contain IIS required files.
i fix it by reinstalling IIS. surely it works.
and before that check the folder in winnt/system32/logfile
didu find the w3svc folder, perhaps we can fix it without reinstall IIS. anyway reinstalling is the easy way to fix. unless u get important things that prefer not reinstalling
Make sure you use the default folder name for storing pages. IIS expects to see this folder.

hello, I have installed and unistalled IIS two times to fix the problem but none worked. I have located w3svc1 folder but I dont know what to do with it. Default folder location for www service has not changed. I also followed the link stevenlevis has provided above. But my comp is not in network. It's a standalone PC with IIS on it. THe service doesn't recognise itself?
I am Sorry that I have misunderstood the problem. In fact the webserver is showing html pages but not asp pages.
I was thinking that the problem is connected with the error messages shown in the event log because if I uninstall IIS then the error message is gone, when I install it again it reappears. But from the microsoft's website it seems that the problem will arise on every standalone pc with win2k professional os if no network interface card is present on the machine. You guys also check this out. Now I think that the error message in event log is not related directly with current problem.
Let me elaborate the facts in detail. The IIs server was previously working on my machine when I installed win 2k around a month back. But it did not use to get connected at first attempt. That is, whenever I invoked a webpage on the webserver for fisrt time after booting, it showed message that cannot connect to internet site in the url. press 'work offline' or 'try again'. After clicking on 'try again' the webpage was shown.
afterwards I was working with VB- IIS project and found out that the server was showing cannot access page error due to some file permissions. Since I don't have NTFS system on system drive I dind't understand the problem and decided to uninstall and reinstall IIS. The problem appeared after reinstalling IIS.
This is what happens now. I shows that the website is found message in status bar  but shows same prompt as it previously showed. After clicking try again button it shows HTTP 500 error message - page cannot be displayed. I can open the a webapge page by doubleclicking it but not through webserver. Also note that I haven't made any changes to default webpages.
Hello guys, can anybody help. Can I fix up the IIS server to show ASP pages or I'll have to reinstall win2k pro again with all programs? Reinstalling IIS does not work.
I suggest not to reinstall OS.
Surely can be fix with reinstall the IIS.
anyway have u install the TCP/IP for loopback capability.
if u don't install any protocol u can't use to connect to ur own site.

and also check out the Pages in computer management, if the path to the site is exist or not.
eg. http://localhost/default.asp
               or
http://localhost/printers/

Thanks rickson for your suggestion. yes I tried to open the pages suggeted by you but the server cannot show the asp pages. The message in IE statusbar shows as website found waiting for reply (for .5 second) but later on shows as page not found.
How to install tcp/ip for loopback capability. I don't have networking services installed on my comp because i don't have network card. But still the IIS was previously working well. I didn't get what rickson exactly wants to say. And also what are default configuration settings for IIS? any link?
i mean that do u have any TCP/IP protocol install on ur computer.
u can check on my network properties and right click on any connection.choose properties and check whether TCP/IP install or not.

and by the way, have u check the virtual path created in IIS by using computer management?

and did u change the WWW port on the IIS config?
usually the port is 80 , if u change, then u must specified the address like this:

http://localhost: PORT NUMBER
ex: http://localhost:82
Hi  and thanks for your suggestion. At last I have succeeded in getting the IIS up and running. But there was no fault in configurations as some of you have pointed out. The www and ftp services directory were the default and no change in default IIS settings. The webserver was showing html pages but not asp pages. As has suggested I actually installed and uninstalled IIS 4 times but there was no solution.
I still don't know what the exact problem was but the last try was to uninstall the IIS and install windows 2000 pro again. I actually used to repair the system in installation options so that I don't loose my current applications. This approach worked out. After installing IIS this time it is NOW SHOWING ASP PAGES. But it occasionally shows error message while shutting down the system (after working on asp pages) as dllhost.exe issued illegal instruction... page fault error...
I believe that dllhost.exe is used by IIS to show asp pages. So one favour please. To prevent such catastrphic failure in future, I think I should have some program to restore my system files. I know in win98 sfc.exe works but what do we have in win2k? Also is there any program to clean up win2k registry safely for any componenets whose files are missing on hard drive?

thanks ed, Ill certainly lookout for Norton Ghost. As you said I do have Norton Antivirus on my PC but on on Win2k. It's on Win98. And last, let me have some time to decide whome to credit. Thank all of you for your help.

The OWA keeps shutting dow the error is error 'ASP 0115' unexpected error /exchange/USA/logon.ASP  A trappable error occurred in an external object. the scrip cannot continue running.

Can someone help with this problem...
You need to update your service patch to 4 at least. Also you said you are not running a NTFS so your backup will be limited to 4 gigs in size.

That error is for a logon failer to your host web site. Since your not on a network it will fail.
