XP hangs when searching for files or folders
Hi, When I go Start\search for files and folders from the taskbar in XP Pro, the search dialog box isn't displayed and the taskbar then becomes unusable. Clicking on start doesn't do anything and any programs that were open in the taskbar can't be maximised. Programs can still be opened from the desktop. When I go to task manager it shows CPU usage for explorer to be fluctuating between 40 and 50 %.
To regain use of the task bar the computer has to be shut down, it says that explorer is not responding when this is attempted. When it restarts it works fine again until I attempt to access search when the same thing happens again.
I've installed all the updates for XP and it makes no difference. Any ideas anyone. Many Thanks in advance.

This sounds like one of those problems where every was working great, SOMETHING happened (software installed, etc), then its not so great. Identify a date prior to the problem, then try system restore. Good Luck!
