XP keeps restarting computer

We bought a new computer 3 weeks ago and this is the second one-we took the 1st one back because we thought there was a problem with the computer it self.  We will be online and the computer will shut down and restart. We get to error messages...C:\minidump\mini041903_01dump and the second is c:\docume~1\owner\local~1\temp\wer8.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml;  This is being real annoying as we have to wait for the computer to restart and then go back into our internet service and go through every thing all over again.  This does not happen at any set interval as we can go for hours at a time before anything happens or it will hapen several times in a row.

check in your bios if you have wake up on lan enabled. if so disable it. also check for advanced power management options.

Another thing I would look at is if one particular device driver is causing the problem. Start by disconnecting as many devices as possbible (printer, Zip drive, scanner) and operating for a while and see if it runs OK. If so, then gradually add your peripherals back until you find the one that may be causing the problem.
Also look in Start> Settings> Control Panel> System> Device Manager to see if there are any '?' devices to see if you need to update a driver.
If you really feel adventurous, go to Administrative Tools> Event Viewer and see if there are any clues there as to what might be causing this.
The last thing to consider might be the power supply. I have seen that cause the problem you are describing.  Good luck.  -JerryC
I will suggest u to boot up the system with the Windows XP CD and do a repair.
Why dont you try cleaning up your drives using Disk Clean up?
Go to Start and then click on Run and type in "cleanmgr". This cleaning utility available with all windows versions cleans up files in temporary folder and cache files. Hope this helps,

Well, some things to check. I won't put references here to the
Microsoft Knowledge Base articles unless you require because I'm so lazy. :-)

1. Set the size of the page file to 0, reboot, then set it back, reboot again.

2. In the BIOS: "System BIOS cacheable" -> set it to Disabled.

3. Control Panel/System/System Restore: Turn off System Restore, reboot, then set it back, reboot again.

4. If all of the above won't help, then Control Panel/System/Advanced/System/Startup and Recovery, here clear the Automatically Restart check box at the System Failure group. Then reboot.

5. After 4. you may additionally right-click My Computer, select Manage and in the Event Viewer you can view System Events that are Errors. Just check which driver, service or program caused an error that triggered the automatic reboot. (It's more simple than it seems.) I've found a stupid scanner driver that tried to get network time without network installed on the computer. So Windows XP rebooted. Clever...

6. There had been some video card drivers that need an update. You may check for the newest versions of the drivers.
No comment has been added lately, so it's time to clean up this TA.
I will leave the following recommendation for this question in the Cleanup topic area:
