what is the windows registry for ??

it is seen on installing softwares that the information has been added to the registry .
what does it mean ?
what is the importance of registry in windows ?
is there anything analogous in linux?
what if a softwares' information is deleted from the registry>
why does'n it work then?
there are some others which work on only copying them to the system and not installing >is information in registry not important in that case !!

Not all programs use the registry. The registry is a database of information about the hardware, drivers and some of the software and host of assundry of other things that is on the system.
The programs that do use the registry house any number of pieces of information. Some of it is configuration information. Some of it is licensing information
