ATTENTION OPERATING SYSTEMS EXPERTS

There has been an influx of new users on Experts Exchange since the PAQ questions were released on google. For this reason many topic areas have been flooded with questions that are too many Moderators to handle alone.

With the help of few experts we are able to keep some of the topic areas running pretty smoothly but some are being overrun with questions that have never been closed. We are requesting that any experts who have a few moments a day will help us with a cleanup effort to clean out the abandoned questions in this topic area.

With approximately 10 experts cleaning 20 questions a day we can have this area cleaned in just a few weeks. Is there anyone willing to roll up their sleeves and give us a helping hand to cleanup this topic area?

Many of us know the benefits that Experts-Exchange has brought to us in the past. Now let's see if we can do something to help this wonderful site so it will have a future. All we need is a handful of experts to participate. We need experts who want to help and are not afraid to make decisions on their own.

If you have a few minutes a day and are willing to help out get this topic area back in order, please respond to this question and let us know. We truly will appreciate any help. For more information regarding the cleanup process please see this link:

http://www.cityofangels.com/Experts/Cleanup.htm

Before you begin I will need to assign you to an area to work in. So post here first.

Thank you for your time!

Hello YensidMod,

I've (admittedly briefly) read through your link.
I have a few questions...

First off, I would be willing to assist if I am able.

Now the questions I have:

In reference to the cleanup crew being experts in the areas they clean, what, or who determines if they are experts in that TA?

Is there a minimum amount of work desired by EE Mods? (Such as are you asking for someone to commit to "cleaning" at least 100 Q's a week, or can they say "I can commit to 25 Qs/week")

At the beginning of each month, is there any objection to me wanting to attain the points necessary to maintain my premium status before continuing with cleanup?

Can I change my commitment? (In other words, can I say this week I want to commit to doing 50 Q's and then next week realize that I won't be able to do that many, so commit to 35 Q's and then the week after jump it back to 50 Q's?) or decide I don't want to or am unable to continue cleaning, how easy is it to resign?

and finally, when you have the time, see here:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20654260/I'm-curious.html

Bartender_1 and Renots,
Thank you for your willingness to assist.  Do not start until I assign you the ranges, so that you don't run into each other.  In the mean time glance throught the cleanup questions in cleanup to get an idea of format.

You are an expert if you say you are.  There is no test. Moderators review the cleanup questions and the Cleanup Volunteer (CV) proposal.  When I worked cleanup questions, I usually agree with about 99% of what the CV propose.

There is no minimum amount of cleanup question that you have to commit, but there should be some progress each month.  I will probably assign each CV a range of a month, which consists of 100 to 200 questions.  Each can complete them at their own pace.

By all means get your premium points to maintain your premium status.  But 3,000 points is pretty easy to achieve.

Yes, you can change your commitment.  I understand about school, special occasions, unforseen illnesses, etc.

I posted in the Louge question.

I'm interested too
st_steve,
That's great. The more the merrier.  Read over the Cleanup link.  Look at the format of other CV in the cleanup area. In a couple of days, I will assign you a range of questions to work.

Best regards,

No problem. Thanks
I'm just joint EE for about a month, if you feel confortable, I would like to give my hand to help.
Yip add me... All these questions left open irritate me too so might as well help cleaning up...

Steve
paullamhkg and stevengreen,
Yes, welcome aboard.  Please read the cleanup FAQ that I posted in the first note. Look at the format in the Cleanup area.  I will assign question ranges tomorrow.

Bartender_!,
Lte me know one way or another whether you would like to join the fun.

To all,
There is a similar cleanup effort going on in Windows XP topic.  The number of backlog questions is even biiger there.  If you are as comfortable with that topic as this one, let me know.

Regards,

YensidMod
I would like to help with this also.

-jdm
I didn't notice the part about the XP topic cleanup at first...

I would feel comfortable participating in that effort if I could be better used there.

-jdm
following,
I am checking with the Moderator organizing that effort, so I will get back with you ASAP.

Regards,

YensidMod
Here are the ranges of questions that will be worked.

July-Aug     2002     stevengreen
Sept                        Renots
Oct 1-17                 st_steve
Oct 18-31               paulamhkg

I've keep the assignments in the 100 questions range.  I'll increase it if you want more to do.  October was a big month, so I had to break it down. When you are finish with your assigment, check here or with me at YensidMod@experts_exchange.com

stevengreen, there are not that many questions in July through August.

Bartender_1, let me know if you want to do this or not.

following, I still have not heard from the Moderator in charge of Windows XP.  I will get back to you when I hear.

Get started when you can, and if you have a cleanup question or any other question, email me or post here.

Again, thank you for your willingness to help perform cleanup.

What am I supposed to do with "The List"? Send you a copy by email? Keep it as my reference?
Oh, nevermind :D Figured it out....I'm a bit slow (these days, or sometimes, all the time!)
st_steve,
No question is stupid here.  As you already found out, post the list of 25 to 50 questions on the Cleanup Topic Area.  Put a date of 7 days from the last question you recommended in the title.

Also, one or two experts will likely disagree with your recommendation. Do not take their comments personally.  A Moderator will look at it and make a final decision.  You don't even have to respond.

Regards,

YensidMod
Oh, I don't get offended easily, trust me :) Takes too much energy to care and argue about small and such trivial things. Everyone has their own opinions and I'm SURE they will differ with my recommendations.

I've only done the questions from 01-Oct-2002 to 08-Oct-2002. Will do some more next time I log on. I must log off now for my study sessions, I'm doing CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional). Wish me luck!
st_steve,
Best of luck on th CCNP.

Yensid
st_steve,
You can do as many questions as you want at one time, but don't present a list of more that 50 questions at a time to the Cleanup area or else the Moderator get grumpy. :)

Regards,

YensidMod

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you YensidMod,
I am interested in assisting, I'm more comfortable with Windows 2000, but I believe I'm competent enough to handle CV duty in Operating Systems ~grins~

Bartender_1
Bartender_1,
I checked in the Windows 2000 area.  There is a great need to clean up there.  If you like, I can get you moved over there.

there will be overlap of st_steve and me, is that ok?
Paulamhkg,

I've done my range. Any more? Bring it on :)
pallamhkg,
The posts are general cleanup pings, not like specific recommendations by you.  These posts are by the cleanupguy, which is really a Bot run by EE to remind askers to close their questions.

So go ahead and make your recommendations.

st_steve,
That's great.  Will you take all the questions in the month of November 2002?  How was the study sessions on CCNP?

Regards,

YensidMod
Nov 2002? Alright, no problem.

CCNP study sessions are going very very slowly at the moment. I'm doing self-study, you see? I got my CCNA 2 yrs ago so I need to upgrade to CCNP before it expires (CCNA is valid for 3 yrs). Still on the first book (out of 4 books), Routing Exam. Too many routing protocols! :( BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, RIP, bla de bla!
Sounds good to me...

paullamhkg,
Thanks for the quick finish.  Obviously I made the range too small. :)  Would you do cleanup for the month of December 2002?

Done Nov2002! Let me rest, please? :D
st_steve,
That was fast.  Yes, you can rest. I did not mean for you to do the questions right away.  I gave you a bunch so that you can do over time.  Let me know when you have rested. :)

Great job!

YensidMod
I need to continue with my CCNP Routing exam so how about another range next week? I'll post here when I'm good and ready? :)

I tell you, it was pretty hard to decide which expert gets the points and what to do with almost all the questions. Most of the comments were pretty good too, I got to learn a lot of new stuff as well.
Hey Yensid:

I've been doing about 20-30 a day; just completed Sep.  Let me know if you need any more help!
Renots,
Thanks for letting me know.  Thanks for completing the job and posting it!  For the next range of questions, please cleanup the month of January 2003.

At this rate, we will be the first cleanup group to clean up an entire topic area.  Thank you everyone for the help.

Regards,

Yensid

OK, no problem.

Just out of curiosity, what's the ultimate goal?
Renots,
Good question. The ultimate goad to have all the questions cleaned up to about a month before new postings. Then it will be continual maintenance to stay a month behind.

Regards, YensidMod
YensidMod

That's a good goal. :) I will continue to volunteer on that "continual maintenance" in this TA if you wish to keep me on-board.
st_steve,
That's where we are headed.  Let me know when you are rested. :)  BTW, I just gave you some points in a question that I closed.

Hi YensidMod

Give me a few more days to get some of my personal stuff sorted out, and I'll be back on to do some more cleanup.

Yeah, I saw the points in that question. You devil! You gave me a B grade! :D Not really complaining though, I'll take the points any way I can. :) I've been here almost 4 years and I haven't even broken the 50,000 points barrier yet! Damn! :( And I've seen "experts" who only signed up 2 weeks ago and they already have like 40,000 points? What the...?? :D
Hey Yensid:

What are we supposed to do when someone accepts our cleanup comment as an answer?

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20366304/Mounting-drvspace-on-Win-2000.html#8798740
Renots,
I just unaccepted the answer.  Before last week, this would been a big deal to fix.  Now it is simple.

Regards,

YensidMod
Thanks.  I didn't know whether it would be found and corrected during the actual cleanup, or whether we should let you know.  So I guess we just post them here when it happens?  I mean, I love the points, but  ... :)
Being a new user (from Google ironically), I'm willing to help!
I've had a few questions answered thanks to EE, and would like to contribute!
xitit,
I already have great help on the Operating System topic.  But if you have expertise in and would like help cleaning Windows XP

stevengreen,

Ya know, the only downside to posting all the cleanup reminders is that it makes your profile look like you comment on everything, and answer very little :(
Renots,
You are right.  It does make it look that way.  But you can also tell users that you got those comments from helping the website stay clean.
I am in the middle of checking  paullamhkg first list.  It's a long one.

Regards, YensidMod
That's right Renots, and also it makes us look like we ask a lot of questions. Until last week, I've only asked about 4 questions, and now I've asked 19 questions? Oh well....
Sorry YensidMod

It will not happen the 2 long list, I've already make others short, I'm really sorry abt this :)
paul,
Did not mean it as recrimination.  Just makes it easier on everyone.  Apprciate the work.

YensidMod
YensidMod

Just a really unimportant question, just out of interest really. How many "experts" are registered on this site? 5000? 50,000? 2 million?
YensidMod,

Finish all for Dec, 2002, I need to call a time break for me, since there will have a small project coming weeks, will let you know after I available, ok:)

As st_steve said, can learn a lot during the clearence, I will not miss it, so don't put me out ;)

Paul

st_steve,
There are about 1,300,000 to 1,400,000 members in EE. Sorry I did not answer you earlier.  We had site trouble. I saw your email, but lost where it came from.

EE Moderator
Hi Yensid

That's a lot of members there, and I'm sure a lot of expertise in almost evey area of the computer industry.

Yes, I had a few "Error 500" problems while trying to access this site, I hope everything is sorted out now.

Thanks for posting your email address. I might drop you a line or two some time. My name is "Si Thu" by the way, so don't delete any emails that came from that name :D And no jokes about my name please, I've heard almost all permutations: SeeThru, R2D2, C2, Shi-Tu, SeeGuu..yeah..almost every permutation...can you think of some more? :D
Hi Yensid,

The small project will only take me 2 to 3 weeks 'cos it's just recontruct my company database, and joining MSSql with MySql into a big MySql server in linux, and rebuild the web interface. I'm the one who planning it, not work on it, so I will be back soon :)

Paul
Hi Chmod, thanks for that info. 4000 active experts is pretty good for a "free" website, where people just come and offer help, and not expect anything in return.

Anyway, I better get to my range (Feb 2003). I've been pretty slack lately.
Comment from YensidMod  Date: 07/05/2003 01:22AM EST

st_steve,
There are about 1,300,000 to 1,400,000 members in EE.

=====================================

Administrative Comment from Chmod  Date: 07/06/2003 03:53AM EST

st_steve, the EE home page says 150,000  (registered) experts, and I believe 80,000 of them are regarded as active - I presume that means they log in regularly;

=====================================

https://www.experts-exchange.com/

550,000 IT Solution Articles Knowledge Base.
Over 1,000,000 Members.

=====================================

Who's telling me stories??! :D
st_steve,
It takes your 3 days to figure this out? :)  All numbers are correct.  Chmod talks about the number of experts.  My number talk about total membership, askers and experts.  And the EE front page talks in big round numbers:  over 1,000,000 as oppose to near 2,000,000.

Got it?

YensidMod
Again, I'm a little slow.

(Refer to my forth comment on this thread)
I would like to help and have read the information post as well, but I do not have 3 months of consistent time in even though I have been a member for many years. Also, I do not have a recommendation as I do not know any moderators. But I would still like to help and become more involved.

Ah...that's a good one :)

Hey Yensid:

January 03 is DONE!  Any more left?  LOL  I might be a bit slow getting started on the next batch.  I'm moving the 23rd - 26th, and won't have access to the net during that time.
Do we get points for cleanup work, or has that just been from the other stuff I've participated in?  I don't keep a close track on the points - just trying to help :)
Renots,
For now, you get points only for answering questions.  We are working on some incentives for Cleanup Volunteers. So keep track of the number of questions that you have done.

Hi Yensid

I've been a bit slack these days, I'm still working on Feb 2003. Done up to 9th Feb 2003 so far. Will continue, slowly but surely :)
st_steve,
Thanks for letting me know.  I thought that these long lazy summer months is affecting you. :) But you are in Australian winter?

YensidMod
Hi YensidMod,

I finished the Dec, 2002, and I've to say sorry that I miss that much to do, and I forgot that I really work on Dec 2002 before, sorry for my bad memory, may be too much drink :)

Anyway, what's the next

Paul
Hi Yensid

Yes, I'm in northern Australia (city: Cairns) and we're smack-in-the-middle of Winter. Of course, it doesn't get that cold in Cairns, around 12 degrees the lowest temperatures at night. A pleasant 25 degrees during the day. Gets mighty (more like "stinking"!) hot in summer though, 35 degrees with around 85% humidity.

Sorry for the weather report. :) I've been really busy at work lately, that's all. Driving here and there like a headless chook as well. And just yesterday, someone sent me to the wrong site, and I ended up 2 hours away from where I was supposed to be. And it was a high priority job as well (server problems at a bank). Oh well...you get that. :)

Will continue with Feb 2003. Dare I ask for a little patience? :)
st_steve,
I understand about work and family.  Thank you for your contribution.

YensidMod
Yensid

What should we do with questions like this?

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20506688/Mac-or-PC-for-graphic-design-work.html

This is an opinion-based question, and everyone's comments can be considered correct. And I can't possibly split 20 points between 10 experts, right?
st_steve,
Since you can only give the points to one person, give it to the first correct answer.

YensidMod
Yes, YensidMod,

I will finish it :)

Paul
Yensid

Got it

By the way, who are you going to award the 20 point you have allocated for this question? :D
st_steve,
No, this is going to be longest 20-points question ever. :)  But we will be giving out expert points for working on cleanup questions, as a thank you for your help.  This plan is part of the CV autograder that we are developing.  It will be implemented in 1 1/2 to 2 months.

YensidMod
Hi YensidMod,

I think this TA is too long, is it good to cut it down or you issue another TA with the quote with this TA and PAQ this one ? Just a suggestion :)

Paul
Yensid

CV Autograder? That sounds "interesting", even though I have no idea what that is! :D I'm sure you'll let all of us know in due time?

How about some technical information on the EE servers? Just out of interest of course, I'm not going to try to break into the servers to get myself more points or anything like that :D I know it's running a flavour of UNIX, that's about all I know.

--------------------

Hi Paul
Paul,
I agree that the question is too long. I'm thinking how to create a new question without recruiting more volunteers.  We have 4 good workers and we are almost done.

st_steve,
The idea of the autogradeer is have the Cleanup Volunteer hit a button and select Delete, Refund or Points for an expert.  If no one object, a N grade is automatically given. If an expert objects, the question goes to a special place for Modeator to review.    This saves the time of 2 reviews.

I don't know what servers EE are using.  I know they are brand new as of 2 weeks ago.  An a hint to the CVs here, they are number www1 to www5. If you ever have difficulty accessing www, select one of these others.  And the servers are running awefully slow since this afternoon.

Hey Paul, we have to stop "chatting" :) I'm already at the new question, but no "chatting" over there, alright? Just pretend you don't know me. :)
Hi st_steve which one you are in? send me email
