Search Assistant not working in Windows 2000

Recently the Search Assistant search tool in Windows isn't working. When I click Start/Search/For Files or Folders... it opens fine.  I type in some search criteria in "Search for Files or folders named" and click Search Now.  Nothing happens!  It's like I didn't even do the search.  please help.

Thanks in advance-

Chris

Do a quick test...open my documents folder, and create a new text document call it "test.txt", then select the "Look In:" option and select from the top of the list my documents and  then type "test" in "search for files or folders named:"

see what happens:

then open the test document and type some text in it then search for that text in a similar mannor but this time using the "containing text field" I am assuming that you are using windows 2000 or XP
Hi

The search is quick..........If you searched for somthing that is not on the machine, then it will appear that nothing has happened, so do a search for some work you have on the machnd and see if it finds it, or do something simple like   *.doc

If it still dont work make sure where your searching, C: etc, and if that dont help then put your OS CD in the drive and at the start/run box type SFC. and enter.

Hi psta...

Nothing happens in either search.

Hi Huseyin1...
Yes, I did a normal search... this is not the problem, the search assistant seems like its totally non-functional
Can you clarify what you trying to do with the Windows 2000 CD?  I'd rather not mess anything up more.

Thanks-
Chris
If you have tested all the possible search options and they dont work then there is a fault with the Operating system as Huseyin1 has pointed out you will need to do a repair!

Ok, Can you please elaborate on how to repair just the search function, so I don't have to reinstall the entire OS?
There is no way to repair only the search function it is a repair process
no, you dont have to install 2000 again, what I was saying was type SFC in the start/run box, and put the CD in the drive,
what this SFC (system file checker) does is it looks for currupted system files which im sure control the file search feature, so these files will need to be replaced, and the system will get it from the OS CD.
you cant really go wrong with SFC.

repair option will not install the full OS, it will just look for the things which need to be repaired.
in your case search assistant.

Hi Troy-

The issue is on a standalone HomePC. I am the ADMIN and logged in as such.  However, I do have MS Office XP with Frontpage installed.  I installed an admin copy of the software on the computer, and updated the actual MS Office files via this admin copy.  Otherwise there is no network running, other then through my cable modem to the internet.  Knowing this, do you believe the NTregmon utility would still be worthwhile.

Hi Guys-

I am concerned about doing a repair with my original Windows 2k disks, as I believe they are no later then SP2 on that disk.  If I run a repair, don't I risk it installing a whole bunch of older system files onto my computer that is now up to date?

Thanks again
This cd will find out what is supposed to be repaired, so i will only repair not working component, if other component are working then it would not reapir/reinstall them.

If someone can elaborate on how to repair windows 2000, that would be wonderful.  I am very tentative about running the setup command off the CD, as I think it will try to setup the very old Win 2k configuration again.  It doesn't say anything about a repair option on the CD.  I tried the SFC utility in Start/Run, and the executable flashes a command prompt and closes in an instant.  Doesn't appear to do anything though.
Bman005 yes the ntregmon utility is an essential tool to rectify these sorts of problems and you will find when you run the program that it actually will reveal other inconsistancies with the OS. Give it a try...

Troy-

Where do you find this ntregmon utility and what does it actually do? I assume its for Windows 2000, right?
you bet you can find this utility and other utilities at www.sysinternals.com. to answer your second question it is for all OSes and for curiosity sake run the file monitor on your 98 boxes you are going to be suprised at how much information is actually being transfered in the background.
