Automatic Updates -XP -Same update keeps downloading

A while ago, I did a system restore.  Not sure if that is the cause, but here is the problem:

Security Update for Windows (819696) keeps popping up that it has been downloaded and needs to be installed.

I install it, and it pops up again, usually the next day.  This happens again and again.  How can I let XP know that its been downloaded and to stop bugging me about this?

Thank you.

Greetings, Eltmon!
Clear your cache.  Delete all temporary internet files and cookies. Reboot computer. Now does the update shows.

Your windows update install log may be corrupted. Delete it and let Windows rebuilt it.

Hi Eltmon, a couple more tips for you:

Make sure Cryptographics services is running (all programs--admin tools--services), this will prevent you from succesfully loading any of the patches. Check the Event Viewer (all programs--admin tools--event viewer) for specific crypt32 error messages. Problem is, it snowballs unless to go back and check. patch here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5aba6a3b-f67b-4b18-b4b5-62e69a0104ce&DisplayLang=en

Also, read the article posted here above, and confirm you _do_ need the patch, and that your file versions are older than those stated there. If you've updated going backwards in time, you could have some files that are the right version and some that are not. (this patch specifically is not superceded by others, but there have been a lot of fixes released since this one).

Also, confirm whether the patch is listed in the registry or not (see below). One problem would be your inability to download, versus a whole different problem on the windows side of not recognizing you already downloaded it.

Windows XP:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP1\Q819696\Filelist
Windows XP with SP1:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2\Q819696\Filelist

Check if you downloaded the cumulative patch on October 14, KB826939. If you haven't and are working chronologically, i suggest you install the patches rolled into KB826939 individually. It may take a long time (do less than 4 at a time and leave a day in between to test your machine), but not all are applicable to everyone and they'll just mess up your system more.

Lots of users had the same problem you did with this DirectX patch Q819696, and it's been tweaked since the original relase.

Check to see unnecessary programs are turned off (MSN messenger especially), and your antivirus as well. Norton specifically gave other people problems with this patch. If it's an old version, you may need to download updates from the Symantec site.

When downloading from the site:
Choose the Save option, NOT Open.
Reboot.
Disable all unnecessary applications including antivirus
Double click the saved file and follow the prompts.
Reboot and try update again

Hope this helps, post back with your results!

Hi Eltmon.

I have suffered myself this situation several times, with more than one automatic update.

It seems to be that the automatic update fails (you'll never notice about that) and so it retrieves the info about that update been availiable again the next time you log on. You can check this situation on your install log ('View installation history') in the Windows Update page left panel.

One solution that worked for me was to go  manually to Windows Update and install the update interactively. Most of the times this kind of installation works fine.

Also note that sometimes one update fails if you chain it with another one that has dependencies with it (this means that both updates modify the same files). So, if you see more than one patch to install in the list, try installing only the previous patches shown in list and only then try to install the offending one (probably rebooting in the middle to let the first update to finish properly).

If it still fails, may be it will be a good idea to skip that particular patch for your PC. You can tell Windows Update not to pay attention to a particular patch in the configuration screen ('Personalize Windows Update') in the Windows Update page left panel. This shall make the update not to be shown anymore for that particular PC.

Hope this helps...
