Windows 2000 Dial-Up Networking: "XXXX" is not a valid name.
I have a client that gummed up his Windows 2000 networking (LAN connection no longer worked and Dial-Up no longer worked). I reinstalled Windows 2000 Professional over the old installation as to not lose files and settings. The LAN connection is working fine now. Problem is when I try to create a new dial up connection I get to the last step where it asks you to name the connection and no matter what I put in the dialog I get the following error:
"XXXXX" is not a valid name. The entry name must contain at least one character that is not a space and cannot begin with a period. Choose a different name.
Any suggestions?

I agree with Cluskitt
Otherwise the only other alternative is to reload the machine from scratch because th OS seems corrupt.

Thanks for all of your help!
I patched the OS with SP4 immediately after posting (should have thought of that before) and it worked fine after that.
I split up the points between Cluskitt and garethcummings for spending some time searching and posting on this topic.

Sorry I'm late... got lost on the way!
1) Start > Run > compmgmt.msc
2) Under Services and Applications, go to Services.
3) Find Remote Access Connection Manager Service and double click to open properties
4) Set startup type to automatic
5) Click Start
6) If you're trying to re-establish a connection that disappeard, it will likely reappear after a reboot. If not, recreate it with the Wizard.
7) Close your eyes and silently thank Bill for the helpful error message.
Happy computing!

this answer worked for windows 2000 also.
Deleted 2 keys, restarted and the old connections showed back up.

Thanks so much, we had exactly the same problem. We checked through the registry, exported the keys then deleted the two offending keys.
Many thanks
