The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Okidata Printer - Function address 0x686388a9 caused a protection fault. Some or all property pages may not be displayed
Tags: function, address, protection, fault, caused
I’ve got an Okidata C5200N that is giving me a strange problem.  Whenever I click on printer properties, I get a message box with a title bar of “c:\windows\explorer.exe” and the message below it reads: "Function address 0x686388a9 caused a protection fault. (exception code 0xc0000094).  Some or all property pages may not be displayed.”  Needless to say, I cannot print to this printer.  The computer is a Dell Dimension running XP Home.

I’ve deleted and reinstalled the printer and downloaded the latest driver from Oki’s website.  I found a recommendation to rename the folder in the spool directory, which I did without it resolving the problem, and I’ve tried doing a Windows installation repair. I’ve scanned it for viruses and it came up clean; I’ve scanned for spyware and there was very little,  which I cleaned.  There are no Restore points available for me to restore to an earlier date (strange – since system restore is not turned off).

I am currently trying to run SFC, but it keeps asking for a Windows XP Pro disk, even though XP Home is what is installed.  It seems to reject any CD that I put in there, and I've tried both Home and Pro, both upgrade edition and OEM.

This printer used to print fine.  I don’t believe it is a problem with the printer as it doesn’t even have to be connected to the computer to get the error message.  The other installed printer, a Laserjet 4, works fine.

Can someone please offer a solution that may help me avoid doing a reinstall?  Since I’m the third tech that’s looked at this problem, it sure would be nice to be able to come up with a solution.

Thanks.

Two things come to mind on this one:

1.)  The printer obviously comes with A LOT of software, right?  Make sure that you have uninstalled EVERY piece that comes with it including a.) color managment software b.) drivers in the Add/Remove programs list, c.) services that might be running, d.) Device Manager -->View -->Hidden Devices, e.) delete program file folders after removal, f.) scan the registry for major words like Okidata and executable names . . . save them out and delete the data.

2.)  The C5200N is Postscript and PCL6 compatible.  Try uninstalling the printer and using a standard Postscript printer (color obviously) and see if it is functional.  It might not have all of the bells and whistles with the software, but it will be usuable without wiping the hard drive and reinstalling.

ok . . . 3

3.)  I once had a similar problem with an HP printer.  It ended up being a file that HP copied to the system32 folder and failed to remove it during the removal process or rewrite it during the reinstallation process.  I finally used a program called FILEMON to watch what files were written during the installation process (i.e. start Filemon . . .start installation . . . stop filemon and look at the result).  You can sort the rather long list of files by location so that you can look in out of the way places for files that are possible corrupted and not being removed.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/filemon.html

There is a similar program for registry changes called regmon, but you would get copious results and it might not be useful to you.  Here is the link anyway, though. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regmon.html

PS.  The point of 3 (a hem) is to find any files that are "left over" and delete them before reinstalling the software.  Sorry I was not clearer on that.  Wish we could edit comments.

Rank: Guru

you can use this tool to identify the printer drivers : (and uninstall them)

http://www.driverguidetoolkit.com/

then look for oki folders and files, and delete them

Or, you can try installing the printer in another user profile for a test

Although I lost patience (and ran out of time) and did not get to try the above solutions, I really appreciate everyone's input on this problem.  I knew it would not be an easy one to solve.  I think all three suggestions had merit and were worth trying.  I hate to give up on a problem and not find the real solution, but I ended up with too much time on this issue and just had to format and reinstall.  Thanks again for the excellent suggestions.

I know you gave up, but I wanted to post the solutiuon that OKI gave me when I had this problem, so that future users may benefit.

They determined that one or more of the files were currupted, and windows wasn't allowing the files to be removed or overwritten with new versions from the web site. After much searching and gnashing of teeth, the answer was to get a driver for the next printer in the same class. I have a 5100, so she had me install the 5150 driver. It's a completely different driver, but the 5100 and 5150 are so similar that a 5150 driver works flawlessly on a 5100 printer. For a 5200 printer, you would try the 5300 driver.

I hope this helps someone in the future to regain access to printing without reformatting their drive and reintsalling the os!

I tried for a day trying to resolve this same problem. The OKI printer I had (C8600 colour laser) worked fine - until something was installed on my PC. I'm not sure whether it was an application, windows update (running XP2) or a security update. But something stopped it from working. It was so broken, that I couldn't reinstall the drivers or software properly. Nevertheless, updating the drivers certainly re-established them, and the problem would not go away.
The only solution was to format the machine and reinstall everything. This was not something I wanted to do (does anyone?) but it's now working fine. Obviously, I''m now waiting for it to go wrong again - and I hope I have a good restore point to avoid what has been a very painful experience.
Strange that this problem seems to be OKI - Specific. Perhaps they have a DLL of a similar name to another's application

Other than reformatting, we've tried everything and still need help.   Any other ideas or experience.  We even tried to hook it uo as a network printer instead of USB and no luck there either.  Any help is appreciated!!!

>>  I don’t believe it is a problem with the printer as it doesn’t even have to be connected to the computer to get the error message.    <<   this points the printer; can you test it on another pc?

You're right nobus.  I get the error message even when the printer is not connected. I had a IT expert working on this issue for me for over 2 hours.  Installing and uninstalling software and drivers.  Going back to restore ponts when the printer worked.  So it's something in the computer.  This all happened during the time I was installing another USB device and replacing a serial port device. PS the printer's internal test page works ok.

For My Okidata 5150. One of the solutions suggested was to change the driver from the 5150 to a higher machine (5200).  Tried and no luck the computer would let me.  Even tried to load the prior driver (5100), no luck there either.  Off line it was suggested that I upgrade my system to XP Pro and that maybe that would reset the system so I could use my Okidata again.  Any other thoughts?  I'm almost ready to just reformat but will need a day to do it.

Hello all,

One of my customers is having the same exact issue with an Oki 5100n - Installed the 5150 drivers and all is well now.

Only took me one day to solve:  No reinstall of OS necessary. Details below:

from: David-Howard:It could be a simple as a driver failure or the Spooler Service needs to be stopped and restarted. There are a ton of things that could have caused the initial error. OS failure, Service interruption, printer driver failure, a push from Microsoft, etc. Best thing to do is check your event logs for recordings on the failure....

Grade Received: A
Grading Comments:
This put me on the right track. I knew going in that a reinstall of drivers would complete the fix. Something was preventing a fresh install of the drivers, so I had to find the culprit. Using Filemon (a free utility) to detect filenames during a driver install helped delete enough of the WindowsXP/system32/driver/spooler files to make progress. I also found all of the Okidata references in the registry and killed them off. Now I could finally install the drivers without hinderance. (Earlier I tried installing the drivers on a laptop also using the USB connection, so I knew that nothing was wrong with the printer itself. The laptop printed just fine on the Okidata. The install which I watched carefully also gave me some hints on what to look for on the Dell (Win XP) tower.)

My personal comments were:

Most Correct solution to Okidata c5200n spooler slash driver problem. Be careful not to delete other printer drivers in winXP/system32/driver/spooler folder for your other installed printers. If you rename the whole spooler folder temporarily, you can rename it correctly after the fresh Oki c5200n driver install. Rename the fresh driver install spooler folder so you can copy these fresh files back - now- and in the event of a furture failure. Also deleting the -registry references- to Okidata might have helped proceed with the fresh driver install. Okidata is using some kind of bad technical technique if their driver won't uninstall and reinstall fresh. The blame is with them.

Here is what I did.
1.  Download the filemon utility
2.  Unzip the filemon utility
3.  Clear filemon just before I started reinstalling the Oki c5200n drivers (again!  aaargh!)
4.  Looking at the filemon list - I got a clear idea of filenames during the install.
5.  I attacked those file names.  Carefully deleting and / or renaming folders that were culprits.
6.  Now I used -find- from the top of the registry list.  (Win XP pro)  A search and destroy of Okidata refs.
7.  Now using the Okidata c5200n driver cd, I reinstalled the drivers.
8.  Now I plugged in the USB cable to the back of the printer.
9.  Pushing the power switch.  Everything is back to normal.  (it works now)
10. If you still have problems, go to the add hardware in the control panel and install a (copy 1) of the same Okidata c5200n drivers and then try that one to print.

Bye.  Clay
