Sparc Hardware Spec for setting up DNS Server

Hi,

Can someone provide me with the Hardware spec.,ie.,the Sun Box which could be used to set up a DNS Server on Solaris8 or Solaris9?

 Is a Workstation5,10,20 just enough?

Are there any other issues to be considered while setting up a Sun machine as a DNS Server?

Regards,

Karthikeyan

network transfer performance is more importance then the server itself !

just a intel p2 450(512k cache) box can work fine for a middle size site.

Hi Charles,

Thanks about the hint on network transfer performance.

But it is going to be a sun sparc machine.so I am expecting an answer in terms of sun hardware. What sun box to choose?

karthik
How busy will your DNS server be? If it is to host a large set of local DNS zones or it is to service a large set of local clients you'll need more horse power. For a typical orgainization, say less than a few thousand local clients, any Ultra will do. As the size of the DNS and the number of clients hitting the DNS grows you'd want to move up to something that can hold a bunch of memeory (an Ultra 5 maxes out a 512Mb, a 10 at 1Gb...).
I have seen companies use a Sun netra T1 (1U unit) as a DNS server.

A new alternative is the Sun Fire V100: http://store.sun.com/catalog/doc/BrowsePage.jhtml?cid=77644

A UltraSCSI version is also available:

Hope this helps,

Hi Levie,

 Thanks for the comment.

It is a University network comprising about 6000 clients.

In that case don't you think an Ultra5 would just do it?

Karthik

I think Ultra5 with (more then) 512M memory is ok ...  :)

A U5 should do it, but like charlesfeng I'd go for max memeory (512Mb). And for continutity of server I'd use at least a pair of U5's (Primary & Secondary).
Hi,

The spec offered by the vendor is as below. Is it ok?Can anybody confirm that?

 The model  proposed:

Sun Blade 150 Workstation
650MHz UltraSparc-IIi
512KB Cache
512MB RAM
PGX64 On board Graphics
40GB Internal Enhanced IDE HDD
CDROM Drive and Floppy Drive
Solaris 8 media Kit
Sun 17" Color Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse

Regards,

karthik
That should do fine, it being a bit faster than the run of the mill Ultra 5.
Hi,

As an extension of the above cooment-Is it really required to have an external Disc Drive which contains an emergency disk to boot from in case of trouble?

karthik
