DNS syslog warning

Hi,

Entries in the DNS forward lookup zone file are as below.

   um.edu.my.              IN A 202.185.111.131
                        IN MX 0 um.edu.my.
;
ummail.um.edu.my.       IN CNAME um.edu.my.
                        IN MX 0 ummail.um.edu.my.

After restart I get an error message as follows.

Nov 11 09:12:45 bpk named[1586]: restarted
Nov 11 09:12:46 bpk named[1586]: ummail.um.edu.my has    CNAME and other data (illegal)

Can someone explain what is illegal about this entry? Is irt anything to do with MX records being assigned the same priority?

Regards,

Karthik

Hi Besky,

In that case, can I make both the names um.edu.my and ummail.um.edu.my point to the same IP Address with A records?

Because I want that mail directed to both the names come to the same machine.

Regards,

Karthik
Like this:

um.edu.my.              IN A 202.185.111.131
                        IN 5 MX 0 um.edu.my.
ummail.um.edu.my.       IN A 202.185.111.132 (change this)
                        IN 5 MX 0 um.edu.my.

Iguess you have a separate ipaddress for each hostname.

HTH
Hi Besky,

They are not separate hosts. An alias has been configured in sendmail.cf and that is why it is required to have 2 names for the same IPAddress.

Regards,

Karthik
