Problems modifying Windows 2000 ACLs
I'm running Windows 2000 SP2, IE 5.5 SP1 with all post SP1 updates.
I have lost the ability to add users or groups to any ACLs in Windows 2000. I can modify or remove any existing permissions - I just can not add any.
Any time I click on Add through any ACL modification capable program(mmc,
explorer, etc.) the program crashes. Here is a sample event log. The mmc program crashed immediately after clicking on Add.

There is also a problem in listing what groups a user is associated with. For example, if I use the Computer Management mmc and check what groups a user is a member of, the text is not listed - only the user icon is listed. Same thing if I check what users are members of what groups.
Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
FWIW, I have already tried reinstalling Windows 2000 which fixed the
problem temporarily but it has returned.

I never came across this problem before. Can you think of any software you've installed which may have started the problem? Stuff like antivirus applications, file monitoring/replication software and such may have to do with it.

I have two suspect packages that may have caused the problem not in particular order. The first is Norton Internet Security v2.0/NAV. I think that it could have been the latest NIS driver update(to v2.06) that caused the problem. I uninstalled NIS but it did not fix my ACLs problem so I have since reinstalled it.
My other suspect package is....... drum roll.... Office XP. I have not tried uninstalling Office XP to see what happens. I do know that the ACLs problem did start several days after first installing Office XP.
I should add that I have upgraded to IE SP2 since my original post.
I have posted to several forums in hope of a fix short of reinstalling Win2K. If I have to install Windows again I'm going to reformat the drive first. Last time I just did an "over the top" install. I have good backups. I didn't really pay close enough attention to see a definite correlation between when the ACLs problem started relative to when a certain program or suite was installed.
You can bet that if I reinstall Windows again I will be paying *very* close attention.
