copy old local profile to new domain local profile after joining AD domain

**environment **

40 win2k workstations on NT 4.0 domain
migrating to windows 2003 AD on new server
===================================

After joining new domain, users get a new local profile. I need to copy old local profile to new local profile.

I logged in as local/administrator and tried going to system properties>profiles. All the old nt 4.0 profiles are renamed UNKNOWN. when you click on them the copy button is grayed out. You also get this when you login as newdomain\administrator

I can manually  copy the profile files which takes a long time due to files that don't copy.
I also tried renaming the new profile folder to different name and rename old as the new. Next time I logged in it just created another new profile.

Which files/folders need to be copied over from  NT 4.0 domain local profile to new win2k ad domain?

Is there a tool, script or process to automate this <give details> ?

thanks

Hi texas_computerman,

If you create a trust relationship where your old NT4 domain trusts your new W2K3 domain and add W2K3 domain admins
to NT4 domain's administrators, you are able to manage the NT4 profiles in control panel.

ASKER

Jhautani,

What happens when I join the new 2003 AD on those workstations. Will the nt 4.0 profiles keep their names in SYSTEM PROPERTIES>USER PROFILES?

Steps:
1. create  2-way trust
2. add domain admin to NT 4.0 domain admin group
3.workstations join new 2003 domain
4.login as new user to create 2003 profile
5. login as administrator and copy old profile via system properties> user profiles to new profile

Did i miss anything?

Are there any other ways to accomplish moving the profiles without creating a trust?

What if you are migrating from a Windows NT 4.0 Workgroup and not a domain?  We are in the process of setting up a W2K box which will utilize a domain.  The network is now running on an NT Server that is not a domain it is a workgroup - will this still work?
