asked on

restoring a W2k Server on another Box

All,

I have a backup tape of a server thats burned and need to restore...however im having trouble..

I use Vertitas backup exec for windows version 9.0..and have a complete backup including system state...herein lies the problem, the pysical server is dead so i have another server to restore too, the server that died was a single proc, however it was a SCSI 1 Raided system, mirrored disks (which is prob gonna be the problem)

So I built the new server (which is just an IDE glorified PC, its all I have at the moment) with W2k and installed backup exec...I then restored the old C drive and the system state, telling it to overwrite existing. All went ok, bounced the box, (changed the boot.ini to recgonise the new config, also fixed the MBR and fixboot) so bounced the box..it starts and i get the bar saying windows is loading and thats it...it hangs without going into the windows splash screen...

Any pointers

Sounds like you know what the problem is!  You may want to install the OS then Backup Exec and restore your file systems.  You'll have to re-create your shares, reload apps, etc.  You just can't restore one load onto a different platform and expect things to work.  The OS is looking for hardware that is no longer present.

Hi!
1.When you restore the DC you have to boot in AD Restore mode. Here is an example about how to do that:
http://www.netometer.net/samples/adrestore/step1/step1.html
2.You restore the registry too, which means the server is reading it and trying to load the SCSI drivers. What can help you in that case is a very slick trick for restoring Windowes servers. Boot from W2K server cd. When prompted to choose a new install or restore choose a new install!!! That is the trick. Before the installation begins it searches the hard drive for existing installations and finds your restored from backup installation. Then it promptes you again whether you want to restore. Now you have to agree that you want a restore. Windows preserves all the settings restored from your backup but loads the correct drivers for your hard drives puts the correct entries in the registry.

try doing an in-place upgrade as netometer suggests in #2 above....also, this is not a DC right?

ASKER

No, its not a DC...

Can I confirm this...

1. I install a fresh copy of W2k (do not join a domain, but name the server the same name)
2.Install the back up SW (Veritas)
3. Boot box into Directory services restore
4. restore from tape, include system state and set to overwrite all files
5. Bounce
6. boot from w2k CD
7. Choose new install (this wants to install over installation without prompting)

At what point do I get the option to restore? I done all above and had no luck, although Im sure Ive done it wrong :-|

Thanks for your help
