Domain Controller Died

One of our three Domain Controller servers died. The problem is that it was the Operations Master and I am now getting errors on the other two W2K servers in Event Viewer because they can't see the dead server (no kidding!?!). How do I get rid of the references to this dead server and make another server the PDC and Operations Master?

howdy,

dcpromo, have a look at this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307304&sd=tech

hope that this helps

after seizing control on other servers, ensure your DNS server has been updated to reflect the other server having taken the fsmo from the Deceased server
good luck

I don't want to get rid of AD altogether, well I do but not today. The page in BigC666's note tells me how to remove AD from an active server, my is not active and never will be. Kabaam's article only gives details about FSMO roles, not how to actually perform a seizure. The Windows help explain how to do a seizure, but the second step is to connect to the server- again mine is dead, so that isn't going to work. So the question is how do I seize these roles without being able to connect to the server?
Got it. Don 't connect to the dead server, but instead connect to the server you WANT to take the role. Man that's really easy when you stop banging your head against the wall.

I will give points now. The second article from kabaam had the correct details.
great... now get some wall puddy and fix the hole you put in it with your forehead :-)
I have some good product recommendations to fix the holes (been there, done that)
:-)

glad it helped
