Need to scandisk with win2k in a dos mode.

I've been having lock-ups on a regular basis for about a week. Mainly while on the web but not exclusively. I have to power off to get a reboot. Well this last time I got a corruption in my win2k SP4. It blue screens me during start up (almost to the password screen) with 2 different reasons.

The first one I got was a bios problem with ACPI function and it tells me to update the Bios or do an OS repair by typing "R" from the setup CD.

The second was a Page Fault in a nonpaged area NTOSKRNL.EXE. It said to do a CHKDSK.

The setup CD & setup disks fail and it does a reboot at the prompt when I type "R".

I used a Win98 boot disk to get to a command prompt but it won't let me see the "C" drive to do a scandisk. I thought I'd scan the disk for problems. Maybe fix some sectors and go on with life, guess not.

What boot disk or freeware will get me access to the "C" drive from a boot? OR Is there a way to stop the darn setup CD to just get a prompt?

I need this kind of quickly, that's why the max points.

Boot to Safe Mode, then run scandisk

No, SystmProg is exactly right.  You use NTFSDOS to access the drive and then NTFSCHK to check and repair the disk.  Specific info for NTFSCHK is found at http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/ntfschk.html.  Booting into Safe Mode appears to be not be an option right now.

An alternative if you have trouble with NTFSDOS and NTFSCHK is to install your drive into another computer running XP or Win2000.  Then run scandisk.  Then re-install the drive back into it's computer.

Good Luck!

Are you able to boot into safemode? Or safemode with command prompt? If yes, you can run chkdsk /x from there. Also disable your pagefile, try to reboot, normally, and if that works reenable it.

Also download the UBCD which has many utilities and tools to repair your system. Run memtest86+ on that CD, and check the filesystem tools, which have similar apps like chkdsk, and also the HD utilities of the HD manufacturer's.

Of all the people to neglect posting an "acceptance" it should not be a fellow expert!!!! Sorry guys. SystmProg answered very quickly .. 12 minutes ... and his resolution worked!!! Got it to boot with a chkdsk and it fixed it. So I awarded him/her the points.

Sorry again for being such a putz. I posted the question from another PC and did not log it on the one I use and lost track. Thanks for the help. Sorry for the extra work I added WMIF.
