The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

IBM laptop 760 no operating system

Tags: laptop, ibm, operating, system, os
I have an old IBM thinkpad 760 that a friend gave to me for my kids to use.  I decided when I got it I would wipe out everything on the hard drive, which was running windows 95, re format, and fdisk it and delete old partitions and create an active dos partition.  This laptop came with both an internal floppy as well as an internal cd rom drive, but they cannot run at the same time.  The problem is that when I try to boot from the cdrom it does not even know that the cdrom is there.  I have tried a windows 98 boot diskett , but there is no way to run the cd, even when I get to a dos prompt.  I have exchanged the floppy for the cd drive, but still nothing.  I need to get any os on this laptop so I can use the cd...any suggestions?  I have heared something about copying CAB files over but do not know how.
Thanks for any help!

-) Get a working boot floppy
-) create a partition, "format /s C:", install basic DOS with CDROM drivers and mscdex
-) reboot from HDD with CDROM drive installed
-) make a "C:\INSTALL" directory and copy windows setup files in there
-) then call "setup.exe" from your HDD

I have copied every file from the 98 boot diskette, and windows 98 comes up and then gives me the message   not reading drive A.  I assume that the cd drivers (the correct ones) are still not loaded.  I then abort this and get the message:  The windows startup disk could not create a temporary drive for the diagnostic tools.   This may be because this computer has less than the minimum required extended memory.  Then says:
Path not found - :\command.com
"         "         "   :\extract.exe
"         "         "   :\readme.txt
Bad command or file name
The diagnostic tool were successfully loaded to drive
File not found
Then goes back to c: prompt
Any suggestions where to get the correct drives, or what I'm doing wrong?

the following answer should help you

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win95_3x/Q_21382878.html

basically you have to get a copy of dos on the machine with dos cdrom drivers, then you can boot from the harddisk and start the installation CDROM

06.23.2005 at 06:24AM PDT, ID: 14283723
it might be worth using a 95 boot disk if you are trying to install windows 95 or you might have problems installing even after you get the cdrom drive to work, of course if you want to install 98 this is the right startup disk to use

This website has information on how to create a bootable floppy disk with CD-ROM support.  All files are included

Do you have a bootable windows 98 disk?  If so, you can format the hard drive once you have booted from the CD.  Please give some more details about what will and what will not boot.

What I have done in this situation is to use a Windows ME boot disk then I:

1. Use the "FDISK" command to create me a partition
2. Restart it and use "FORMAT C:" to format the partition.
3. Restart it again and make sure that the CD Drivers are loaded (there is a boot screen on the floppy disk).
4. Put in the Windows 98 CD Rom into the CD Drive
5. Go to "C:"
6. Type "MD WIN98" hit enter then type "CD\WIN98"
7. Go to "D:" (or what letter is assigned to your CD Drive)
8. Type "CD\WIN98" and hit enter
9. Type "COPY *.* C:" and hit enter.
10. The CD will then be copied to your hard drive for a faster install.
11. Type "C:" hit enter and then "setup".
12. Installing Windows 98...

Note: A windows 98 boot disk may work, but i havent tried it, and if it is a windows 95 install just replace "98" with "95" in my instructions.

since you cannot use both disks at the same time you need a bootable win98 cd (assuming your pc can boot from CD's). i beleive most win98 cd's from microsoft were bootable. so, you should be able to boot directly from the cd, assuming it is bootable and your bios settings are correct to allow booting from CD(BIOS is F1 on IBM's i believe).

if your win98 cd is not bootable http://www.bootdisk.com/ has lots of bootdisks avaible and instructions for turning them into boot CD's http://www.bootdisk.com/nero.htm (requires nero burning rom)

however if you cannot boot from CD because your pc does not support it, your best bet maybe to install a copy of dos from a floppy, then install cdrom driver again via floppy, restart your machine in DOS, go to the cdrom drive and run setup from the win98 disc.

whilst dos is copyright of microsoft, there are free alternativies (e.g http://www.freedos.org/  and i beleve this one includes a cdrom driver, althougth i have not used it myself but would be worth a try)

and finding a copy of even MS DOS (probably best for compatibility) should not be too hard. also there are many generic DOS CD-ROM drivers avaible on the web (see http://www.computerhope.com/download/hardware.htm)

one of these techneques should work. otherwise if not maybe you have a hardware problem with the laptop

if you can format the HDD
"Format c: /s"  and sys it you will need to create an autoexec.bat file and a config.sys  file that will allow you to load and run the cd drive from dos. you can copy the cd drivers and autoexec  and config.sys pretty mych from any boot disk from win95 or win98.  After you have the drivers loaded you can make a dir on the c drive from dos

md windows
cd windows
md options
cd options
md cabs
cd cabs

from here you can copy the cab files from the cd into this location on the drive and run the setup.exe from there as well

there are lots of switches you can use from dos to install windows

setup /is /id /iq etc...

alagregg has it.  Install the CD-ROM drivers on the hard drive and then flip drives.  Once you have access to the CD-ROM drive the rest is history.

Almost like a riddle!
