The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Six?
In Sweden at least 3.11 comes on 9 disks.

They are individual files, which are compressed and they can be decompressed individually by a program (included on disk #1, I think) called expand. Expansion is incorporated in the install process.

The floppies are 1.44M formatted. The installation program asks for floppies as needed.

Regards
/RID

Hi Gsuslovich,

The American version of 3.11 consists of 8 disks. I do not know the file contents of each offhand, but you can place all the files together in one directory so long as you have "marker" files to let the setup program know you have multiple disks together in one directory.

Create files called "Disk1", "Disk2" and so on (no extension) and place them in the directory with your install files. When you run SETUP, it will not ask you to change disks.

Precision : the French version consists of 7 discs + 4 for Dos 6.22. The installation is made by inserting the first disc and typing a:\setup which installs first expand and then the other files in a c:\windows directory by default on the HD

(Based on UK English 1.44 disks...)
Win 3.1 had 7 disks
Win for Workgroups 3.11 had 8 disks
Win 3.11 had 6 disks

The last one was released about a month after WfW311. I think it was OEM only. I guess that's the one you want?

I have the disks here - how do you want the info? Pasting six disks contents into this interface is not ideal.. I'll create them and upload them somewhere.. wait a few minutes...

Just see the other question below. There is a link where you can know what files go on each disk.

05.07.2003 at 03:27AM PDT, ID: 8478624
My French version of Win 3.11 for workgroups consists of 9 disks (it is an OEM version) + 4 disks for DOS 6.20 + 2 disks for the upgrade to DOS 6.22.
The index of each individual disk varies from one country to the other, and between win 3.11 (7 disks) and wfw 3.11 (8 or 9 disks). Only the first diskette is the same, with
the following files :(installation files and expansion utility)
install.exe
xmsmmgr.exe
install.txt
setup.inf
setup.shh
all the other files being compressed :
commctrl.dl_
control.hl_
gdi.ex_
install.hl_
kbdfc.dl_
krnl386.ex_
ncdw.dl_
user.ex_

win.cn_
winhelp.ex_
winsetup.ex_
wfwsetup.dl_ (this last one which of course is missing from the win.3.11 disks)

Hi Pasha,

I'd have to disagree on this one. The question itself was about the file organization on each disk. Only one comment was related to downloading illegal software while the rest merely noted the differences in the number of disks depending upon the installation language.

For instance, I have made several backups of my own DOS and Win3x installations, but I may have lost or damaged my install disks. If I wanted to reinstall the software using the correct installation procedure I would have to recreate the install disks using the files that I had previously backed up.

While I agree that the user Gsuslovich seems to have downloaded a Win3x installation that is not organized by disk, there is nothing stated that proves this is the case, so I must give him the benefit of the doubt.

As far as cleanup goes, there is not enough information from the user to determine the correct answer to his question.

I recommend, PAQ / No refund.
