The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

MS DOS 6.2

Tags: dos, download
I got a 486 from a pc sale at work (hey, the pc and monitor only cost me $10)  They told me that it has no software installed, only enough for it to boot up, not even the full version of DOS installed.  My question:  Where can I get a full version of MS-DOS 6.2 online?  Is there anyplace I can download DOS for free?  Is this the best version to use?  Ok, Since I asked more than one question for my "question", I'll burn a full 200 points if you can help me out.

MS-DOS is a copyrighted program and cannot legally be downloaded for free - except.  The exception is if someone owns a legal copy and they are not using it anymore, then they can give it to you, physically or electronically.  In order to prove your legal ownership, you need the paper certificate from Microsoft.

If someone sends you the files by email, you are still faced with the problem of needing a bootable floppy disk to start with.  In order to make the hard drive bootable with MS-DOS 6.22 you need to boot the computer from the floppy with MS-DOS 6.22 and then SYS the drive.

The easiest way is for someone to mail you floppies or mail you a hard drive with MS-DOS 6.22 already installed.  If you live in Silicon Valley, I can provide you with such a hard drive - I have dozens lying around with DOS 6.22.  If you send a self-addressed stamped envelope I can mail you a set of floppies, but I have lost the certificates years ago.

The latest version of MS-DOS was 6.22, I don't think there was any discernable differences between the 6 series.

You might want to cruise by one or two of your local computer shops, they would probable sell you software and a boot disk for very cheap (at most I would think $40 bucks)

You can still buy DOS 6.22, but it's almost unavailable nowadays. Try this link:

You can find other choices here:

Big difference between DOS 6.2 and 6.22 in the way that it manages high memory.  Get DOS 6.22

The only difference between 6.2 and 6.22 is it uses DriveSpace instead of DiskSpace compression (the former has a conversion utility that violated Stac's patent on Stacker disk compression). In fact, the history is 6.2 has the compression. When sued, Microsoft released 6.21 that has no compression, then 6.22 with the rewritten compression code (DriveSpace).

Just spotted copies of DOS 6.22 in CompUSA last Sunday.
