Can you make a floppies from a Win 95 CD for reinstallation.

Besides creating a huge zip file on a ton of 1.44 floppies and risking corruption, is there a way to create a complete set of floppies for a Windows 95 installation.  I have the Windows 95 CD but the situation dictates that I have to use the floppy drive on this particular laptop.  (parallel port is hooped and the CD Rom is dead - laptop too old for replacement parts).
Thank you.

A huge Zip File is your best choice.. True diskette installation requires CABs broken down in 1.44mb chunks.. and SETUP.INI entries for each. Besides.. if you ever need to recover the Laptop again.. it is a huge help to already have the installation disks readily available on the hard drive.

I used the Maxi software as you sugested and copied all the CAB files and setup.exe file.  Unfortunately, when I type setup nothing happens.  Are there any other pertinent files I should be copying to get it to install?
rayt333.. and while you are at it.. tell him how to get that 6.32mb Setup2.Exe file onto a diskette too.. <smile>.
Here is the list of files on the Disk 1 of a floppy set:

Deltemp          1Kb     MS Dos app
Dossetup       71Kb     BIN file
Extract          46Kb     Application
Mini             432Kb
PreCopy 1    473Kb
Readme          8KB      Text
Save32           1Kb      MS Dos App
Scandisk      132Kb      Application
Scandisk          1Kb      Shortcut to Scandisk
Scanprog         5Kb      Application
Setup              6Kb      Application
Setup             34Kb      Text Doc
Smartdrv        45Kb      Application
Wb16off            1Kb      Application
Winsetup        156Kb     BIN file
Xmsmmgr        14KB     Application

Disk 2 has:

Precopy2       1019Kb
Win95_02        642Kb

Disk 3 has:
Win95_3        1676KB

The rest of the set has the same Cab file as the disk number
IE Disk 4 has Cab 4 ect
This information is from a regular Floppy disk set from Microsoft, I have never actually made a set from a CD, but I have heard this can be done, as long as you know what files to include and you have the CD-Rom.
Before you go further.. Nute.. and Rayt33.. which version of Win95 are each of you? Win95.. Win95a.. Win95b.. or Win95c? Using apples and apples really helps.. <smile>.

Rayt33:
You may also want to copy/paste the contents of your SYSTEM.INF file as it is different from the CD version he has.
wsh2
Where do you find the "6.32mb Setup2.Exe file"????
Where is the "SYSTEM.INF file"???

There is no file of this size on the CD version I am looking at???
And there is no file with the name "SYSTEM.INF file" located on my CD-Rom or floppy.

So I guess I can say I have no idea what you are talking about, maybe you don't either. If you have something to addd that may be helpful then that is fine, but if you want to add BS then take it elsewhere

I used the maxi software as you recommended and copied the CAB files (very handy by the way). Based on your list of files on Disk 1 and 2, I created those disks as well.  I copied all the files in one directory on the system and then ran setup from the directory.  Worked well!

I did not require any further files.

Thank you.

If I may ask, how many disks did you end up with?
The original Win95 floppy set was 13 disks, but I checked my CD of Win95OSR2 and there was 28 cab files, I know the floppy set does not include everything that the CD did and I am not sure how many Cab files were on the Win95a CD, I was just wondering for future references.

I had to make the 28 cab file disks and then 2 separate disks for the smaller files you listed.  Total 30.  It was a pain in the behind but I had to get data off the laptop.  FYI the particular Win 95 CD was ver. B.
Thanks again.
OK, glad you got it up and running

PS: keep the disks, you may find them to come in handy again one day.

You got that straight.
Hello Nute
I need a set of floppies to install W95 too - on to an old lap top and an old DX400.
I'm going to try to make the set like you did, but I wondered if you'd be willing to send me the files you made.
I'd be willing to put them up on a web site for other people to use if you thought that would be a good idea.
I do voluntary work here in France for an organisation called EMMAUS which helps to put people who are out of work back on the road to ordinary living. People all over the country give us anything and everything which is then patched up and resold. This provides the funds to house these people and give them a new start. We are beginning to get a lot of old computers and my job is to rebuild a workable machine out of the bits. my best bet is to try to put in W95 but there is usually no CD driver available or I can't get the BIOS to recognise one.
your help would be gratefully accepted.
All the best
Keith
