OUCH! HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable memory ....xms driver not installed.

i was having problems with my windows 95 setup and decided to format my drive. i also fiddled with my bios settings and dont know if that is the root of my problem. Here's the problem:
After formatting my master drive i installed DOS alone and then rebooted the computer. afterwhich i got the error:
HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 002004C0h. XMS Driver not installed.
After clicking ENTER...the message continues...
HMA not available: LOADING DOS LOW
C:\>C:\DOS\SMARTRDV.EXE /X
Smartdrive cannot be loaded b/c the XMS driver, HIMEM.sys is not loaded. Check the config.sys file for a device=himem.sys command line.

Strangely, this error does NOT appear consistenly on boot up. In fact, when it did not appear, I went on to install windows 3.1 and the windows 98 upgrade. but problems still exist that i believe are attributed to this initial problem.

I have had plenty of success previously with formatting my drive and reinstalling. but i never touched my bios settings before as i did this time. My BIOS is AWARD MODULAR. my computer is a K5 166 with 32MB RAM. i have 2 hard drives, 1.2G and 200MB.

any suggestions how to clear up this problem and then furthermore how to perhaps format my drive and reinstall windows 95/98 from the upgrade cd roms i have without going through installing dos an win 3.1. THANKS!!! PLEASE HELP!
