vnetsup.vxd error

While booting a win98 machine I get 3 error messages.  One is the Vnetsup.vxd. Another is vredir.vxd. And the third is DFS.vxd.  I went to Microsoft's web site and searched the first error.  It told me to delete something from the registry and I did. It also said to add a network adapter and remove it and I did that too.  Oh yeah, these instructions were for 95 but I couldn't find any others.  Now the machine still hangs up till I hit any key 3 times but Instead of listing the error messages, its blank where the error message should Be.  It simply says That is couldn't find file .......... press any key to continue.

The  among the listings for that knowledge base article is corrupt. Try running System File Checker and see if those files need to be reextracted.

Could You Elaborate ????
The first thing i would do is to go to add/remove programs in control panel, select windows, and then uncheck the box with the yellow telephone.... then select apply, wait til the system has copied files, then check the box again, then windows setup will copy the correct files to your windows folder, and you can now restart the system. If your computer ask for your windows cd, insert it, and make sure it points to the win98 folder. IE d:\win98 If that does not help, try to enter the network properties, in controlpanel and remove and reinstall what you need to have there...problem solved.... if you use internet and modem on your machine, remember to reinstall tcp/ip, quite useful....

This is files belonging to the network. If you try to uninstall all network software, and hardware, the problem should disapear. try to install one thing at a time, and se if it is ok if not, you might want to manually remove them, by clicking start, and run enter sysedit then all the system startup files will appear. use the search option to try to find the files causing the problem and remove the entry. It may also be a prevously installed isdn-card, og network card, try to reinstall it, and then remove it using uninstall. If all that fail, try to enter safe mode by entering F8 in startup, and remove all networking cards in hardware screen
if you are not feint of heart, here is how to do it:

go to the START/RUN command, type REGEDIT, and enter.

go to EDIT/FIND, and open.

Type in the name of the first file, and click on find, delete the key that it finds.
Do the same for the next two files.

then close the REGEDIT

Reboot and see if that doesn't fix the problem

Okay,  I had already deleted EVERYTHING under the network properties.  And I mean EVERYTHING.  I also used the search feature under regedit and It only found the vnetsup.vxd and I deleted the Value for it.   It seems That was what caused the Erroe message to change to the blank name but not go away.

Anymore Suggestions????????

Sometimes it is not worth the trouble to fix it, just reinstall.... If you want to be a bastard, start another computer, copy the mising files from the other computer into your windows folder...

Is this the key you deleted them from?

Delete the incompatible static .vxd folder from the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

This is a section of the clean boot Windows98 troubleshooter Q192926
To select Diagnostic Startup and avoid loading static .vxd files, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig.exe" (without quotation marks), and then click OK.

On the General tab, click "Diagnostic startup - interactively load device drivers and software," and then click OK.

Restart your computer when you are prompted.

On the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup menu, choose Step-By-Step Confirmation, and then press ENTER.

See the following table for the choices and your response:

      Prompt                                            Response
      ----------------------------------------------------------
      Load DoubleSpace Driver?                           Yes
      Process the system registry                        Yes
      Create a startup log file (BOOTLOG.TXT)            Yes
      Process your startup device drivers (CONFIG.SYS)   No
      DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS                        Yes
      DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS                      Yes
      DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS                   Yes
      Process your startup command file (AUTOEXEC.BAT)   No
      Load the Windows graphical user interface          Yes
      Load all Windows drivers?                          Yes

Note that the location of the Windows folder may vary. You may not see all these prompts, depending on the startup files present on your computer. Use ENTER to respond with Yes, ESC to respond with No.

Note each static .vxd file and respond with No to avoid loading each file. See the following partial list of Microsoft static .vxd files:

      Name of static .vxd file   Provides support for
      -----------------------------------------------
      Vnetsup.vxd                Microsoft Networking
      Ndis.vxd                   Microsoft Networking
      Ndis2sup.vxd               Microsoft Networking
      Javasup.vxd                Microsoft Java
      Vrtwd.386                  Clock
      Vfixd.vxd                  Video Phone helper
      Vnetbios.vxd               Microsoft Networking
      Vserver.vxd                Microsoft Networking
      Vredir.vxd                 Microsoft Networking
      Dfs.vxd                    Microsoft Networking
      Ndiswan.vxd                Microsoft Networking
      Msmouse.vxd                Microsoft Mouse

If the problem no longer occurs, repeat steps 1-6, but respond with Yes to each of the files in the list above. If the problem no longer occurs, it is not related to any of the static .vxd files listed above.

Use the process of restoring by halves to isolate the static .vxd file responsible for the problem.

Delete the incompatible static .vxd folder from the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

I had the same problem with the nwlink.vxd file. I found where the reference was in the registry and deleted the entire folder instead of just the value. Maybe this will work. Good Luck.

tjoiner's answer worked out in the end after I reloaded win98 on top and added all the network stuff back.
