Win 98 only bootup to loading fonts...
My Win98 failed to bootup. The bootlog file indicated the system was unsuccessful in loading windows/fonts/
marlett... and also unsuccessful with all other fonts.
I checked for hardware problem, and everything was fine.
I checked the harddisk, and all sectors are fine.
I can boot up using safemode.
What can I do now? Should I re-install Win98? There are no help on problem with loading the fonts error 0016
bootup.
Thank you.

It's not the font error that is causeing you computer to hang, i have seen this before where it will say something like:
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\MARLETT.T TF
LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\MARLETT.T TF Failure code is 0016
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TAHOMA.TT F
LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TAHOMA.TT F Failure code is 0016
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TAHOMABD. TTF
LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TAHOMABD. TTF Failure code is 0016
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\ARIAL.TTF
LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\ARIAL.TTF Failure code is 0016
and then lots more..
what is the last entry in the bootlog file???
do you get LoadSuccess = user.exe??
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\MARLETT.T
LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\MARLETT.T
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TAHOMA.TT
LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TAHOMA.TT
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TAHOMABD.
LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TAHOMABD.
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\ARIAL.TTF
LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\ARIAL.TTF

I don't recall the last entry in the bootlog.
Basically Maughanb is right about all those 0016 codes.
I fixed the problem by importing a copy of my registry which I have exported few months ago.
The import however took too long and I stopped it after about 20+ hours. The 56% completion of importing did fix my problem.
Stevenlewis was right about the fixing the registry. However I tried those tricks before.
The booting up step by step helped my solve the problem by freezing after the step dos16m.vxd. So I know it was at the stage of virtual drivers.
I don't know what step is after dos16m.vxd, but the bootlog seems to say the fonts.

so is it up and running correctly, all fixed?

yes, it's all fixed!
I am just wondering why my regedit fix, and all other utilities (under system info) did not work.
Only when I import a copy of my registry to replace the system.dat, then it woreked.
Thank you.

Clearly, he solved the problem himself. Should be deleted.
