NetZero / ZCast 0E Exceptions and Invalid Page Faults
NetZero ran fine on a W98SE system with 33.6 dialup connection until, no changes introduced, began getting 0E exceptions. Verified settings, resolution (800x600x24bpp), no system or connection errors logged or reflected as problems. That is the only Internet connection on this backup system, and have seen tons of problems exactly like mine on the Net, without yet a fix. Took down hardware acceleration, no change. Plenty of RAM and available resources remain above 70%. Really strange, since one error message included problem with kernel32.dll.
All standard stuff done, and no time to chase, thus this Q for a conclusive fix. No HW problems, no resource or port conflicts, etc. WindowsUpdate current, directX and activeX components current, drivers updates, etc. Checked SFC and all the other normal stuff.
I'm leaning towards uninstalling and reinstalling DUN. This is a total scsi-system. Plenty of HD space, maintenance run regularly, cache cleared, blah blah.
Thanks a bunch.

Asta, are you using NetZero's logon software?

Thanks a lot. Yes, using NetZero's sign on. Downloaded to CD on primary, installed on backup. Ran OK the few times I used it there and then problems surfaced with 0E exceptions from NetZero, then Zcast caused invalid page fault in kernel32. Haven't yet uninstalled, just removed from start up. Will get more later today. NetZero has a pretty good interactive diagnostic troubleshooting process and all recommended haven't resolved yet. As regards the IE repair process, that reported no problems, nothing to fix, having done all the standard stuff earlier, but thank you for the possibility.
The NetZero build I downloaded/installed is: 3.1.2 (Build 1)

OH YES, that system once had MSN and although I uninstalled all MSN related goodies, continue with IE 5.5 from MSN and the MSN internet icon remains on desktop. Also uninstalled MSN Messenger. Do you think it's related somehow? Sorry to be so sporatic with my input, that system has been my little junk-box and needs some attention soon. Been redoing rooms in hard labor mode.
Thanks again,

Have tried calling NetZero's tech support? (if they have one) Or writing to them? I've always liked their service as a backup except for the auto disconnect feature which gets on my nerves.
asteac, If you have IE5.5 and recently doing some repair or other fixes that might restore the debugging manager accidentally.
See if this is the case that I can trace out at this moment.
(1) Go to inspect:
Internet options, advanced, checked the box
[x] Disable script debugging.
(2) Use CTRL-ALT-DEL to check if Mdm is resided at the background prior to the OE error.
If "Mdm" or "Mdm.exe" is initiated which is the debugging manager, it will debug the IE web site and cause OE errors.
Try to disabled Mdm.exe by
Go to start-run, regedit,
Expand to following keys,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Softwar e\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Softwar e\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\Run-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Softwar e\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\RunOn ce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Softwar e\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\RunOn ceEx
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Softwar e\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\RunSe rvices
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Softwar e\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\RunSe rvices-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Softwar e\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\RunSe rvicesOnce
Found the name and value of Mdm.exe, remove it by right click the name value of Mdm and select Delete.
Restart the computer twice.
See if it helps.

Hi, thanks for all the input/guidance.
In response, these are things that I had already done, without resolution, prior to posting.
-IE Repair, all OK
-DUN reinstall, done
-Not going with Netscape
-Do use NetZero logon software, build 1.
-Noticed that when I downloaded 4.5MB using the NetZero
-HOME page, disconnects weren't happening, interesting.
-MDM continues to be disabled on startup, not in any registry entries under any run*, and disabled within IE5.5 settings.
All standard stuff has been done, along with general cleanup and uninstalling some potential culprit apps and registry cleanup.
Found some interesting comments in scanreg.log which may apply to some of this turmoil, don't know. Example, drive C contained an error in its fsinfosector, fixed. Other entries after subsequent fix/maintenance didn't repeat this error, but did say some errors were found on "C", ignored.
This system is primarily used for backup and video editing, so have a Miro DC30-Plus video board, which may be related to the fsinfosector message.

Hi,
Tried again last night, the system again locked up completely while online with NetZero, no error messages ... hit the dead zone, had to reboot, scandisk, and so on. Hmmm, do you think I should just do a complete uninstall of all NetZero components, Zcast, etc. and remove from registry? Then reinstall from scratch again or once again uninstall/reinstall DUN in the interim? Don't want to spin my wheels, so little time.
Thanks,
Asta

That's probably the fastest and easiest solution as this juncture. You might do well to redownload NetZero also, just to be on the safeside and rule out a possible bad download.

Sorry, haven't forgotten about this issue, and will post back within the next two weeks. The system is currently completely down and unplugged, device changes, etc. to be done after other priorities resolved. Thanks.

Have downloaded software again, contacted their tech support, and so far on two tests, OK. Hopeful. Thanks. This system is a patchwork of unbelievable stuff through time and is due for a complete reformat and reconfiguration, so much on the horizon beyond the access issue. I'll finally hook up my little network and drill that hole in the floor (what's left of it), tee hee.
I appreciate everyone's help.

PS Downloaded new NetZero, is Build 2, bugs fixed, hopefully mine. YAY!
2) DUN reinstall as you mentioned.
3) try netscape 4.75..
I hope this helps !
