Microsoft Outlook

I never purposely used Microsoft Outlook which was apparently part of Microsoft Office when I installed it about four years ago. Recently, I started to get error messages when I click on some website e-mail links and when I click on the Mail button and then select Read Mail.
The error message reads : This program has performed an illegal operation.
mapisp32 caused an invalid page fault in module kernall 32.dll @ 0167:bff7b997.
After closing the error message, I get the
"inbox setup wizard" to select what services I want to use with Microsoft Exchange. When I cancel that out, I see the Microsoft Outlook 97 window as being registered to me.
There is no way to get rid of it. When I do a CTRL-ALT DEL, the error message comes back again and it's the process repeats.
If I send outlook.exe to the recycle bin, when I click on the Mail Button and Read Mail, I get another error message that says it cannot locate outlook.exe. At on time I was led to believe that Outlook and Outlook Express were in no way related to one another. I am running O.E. 5.5.4807.1700.
Any solutions to get me back to where I was a couple of weeks ago - without creating more prblems than I have now.
Going to O.E. 6.0 would be one of those.

I don't know but I think you could uninstall Outlook altogether by using the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Microsoft Office > Outlook. Reboot and then install IE6. Part of the problem is that the system seems to be a bit confused to which email client to use and some of the files and/or registy settings have gotten messed up. So uninstalling Outlook would be a good place to start.

Office doesn't show up on the ADD/REMOVE list. If it did how would I separate the Outlook to uninstall it? Sending files to the recycle bin doesn't work.
Well maybe if you put your office CD in the CD drive I believe it might have options for removing certain office components. Odd that it isn't listed on the Add/Remove.
LeeTutor,
As stated in my question, I never used Outlook and cannot open it to determine what type of installation I have because I keep getting the error messages. I do recall that just about the time this problem started, I downloaded a cumulative Security update from Microsoft that covered over a dozen updates from Security update Jan 25,1999 to Critical update August 2, 2001. This was after I downloaded IE 5.50 to replace IE 6.0 which I had more trouble with than I cared to deal with.
Can I take it off the running task list or something not too involved? Thanks.

Frank
>>>Can I take it off the running task list or something not too involved

Take what off?

BTW Did you unistall IE 6 before installing 5.5. This may be the crux of the problem. If you did the critical updates while IE6 was stiil on the system than some of the updates where for IE6 and is probably confusing the system.
Take off any outlook files. IE6 was removed.
Do you know if any outlook files are necessary to accessing OE via the MAIL buttonin the toolbar?
