Virus

I have Windows 98 with AOL 6.0 and continue to get error messages in Module wsock32.dll. Checked with McAfee and was told that I have Virus w32/Hybris.dll.mm.

Tried to clean with McAfee but they could not and said to replace thie file.

How do I do that? If I put the original disc in will it over write the existing one or do I have to remove the installed 98 first. Will I lose any files if I do it either way?

Try this:
To restore WSOCK32.DLL from backup for Windows 98

Click the START MENU|RUN, type SFC and click OK.
Choose Extract One File from the installation disk
Type: WSOCK32.DLL in the box and click START.
Make sure the intended destination is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
In the Restore From box type C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS or browse the Windows 98 directory on your Windows 98 CD-ROM. This is usually found on the CAB file named "PRECOPY1.CAB"
Click OK and follow remaining prompts.

Rescan with http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp and check you are clear.

I would suggest you download the WSOCK32.DLL from the following site if you do not want to go through from restoring process from the CD.

1) Download the file from the following site.
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?wsock32
Expand it if its zipped.

2) Restart your computer, but make sure when you restarted first thing you do is place the file you downloaded under c:\windows\system\wsock32.dll

Do not launch any programs or connect to internet, otherwise Windows may not let you replace this file once it starts using it again.

If you would like rename your old one to wsock32.old just in case.  Virus is incabaple of damaging your system if the file extension is not recognized on your system. Or you can overwrite it with the new one if you would like.

In case you need it, here is a link to help you get the original file from Win98 CD.
