Windows Update

1.I have Windows 98 SE in my Dell computer. There were some problems which was resolved by 'scanreg' and going back with the help of of a Dell technical assistant over the phone. But now when I try to go to the 'Windows Update' page I get the following message:

2. I have the original 'Windows 98SE CD provided by Dell. Is it possible to update &/or replace the version in the computer with that?

Can somebody please help me? I am desperate as I still have some minor problems which I believe will be resolved by the update.

Look down at the bottom for Microsoft Service Packs.

For all the patches you require for your Windows system. You don't have to use the Windows Update mechanism.

try running "scanreg /fix" from dos. you can also run "sfc" from start>run dialog. but doing what the follower post says may work just fine.

maybe you should get a program like norton.

Microsoft online assisted support tells me that I am not the only one having this problem. They say the problem may lie at their end and they are trying to rectify it. They have suggested that I rename 'loadwc.exe' to 'DONTloadwc.exe' & edit the registry (steps suggested by them). I am afraid to do any regedit myself and so will wait until I find someone who can do it properly. My computer is functionong properly for the programs I use & the web sites I visit and therefore I don't want to screw everything up as I use it for the stock market most of the day. I will now try to clarify a few things from 'Microsoft online assisted support' and might come to you for help sometime in the future.

Microsoft has solved the problem at their end and I have been able to access the windows update website from where I had to update and download 9 programs and patches suggested by them. Everythig is now working just fine.

To be fair I cannot give anybody the points as I didn't get a chance to use them so I don't know whether it would have worked considering that the problem lied with Microsoft.

I would now like you turn the e-mail notification off.
