SFC IPF Re-visited

Hi,
The following IPF occurs when SFC is almost finished running on a W98 SE machine. I found some info on this occurence being related to a problem with certain temporary files, but the fix did not solve this case.
This also occurs when the machine is in Safe Mode.

SFC caused an invalid page fault in
module KRNL386.EXE at 0002:000042cc.

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks, Bill

I'd recommend doing a Win98 reinstall. It sounds like a corrupted system file. Probably quicker than wrestling with this for very long.
And also do a full system scan with a current antivirus data file.

Just to clarify, this is not a blue screen error, it appears in a window and shuts down SFC.
Will perform a scan.
I am on my way out of town right now. I'll report back after the holidays. Thanks, Bill

try "scanreg /fix" from a dos prompt (not a dos window) try running a program like norton. also remove all temp files if you think it is related. delete C:\windows\temp then re-create folder. then right click IE icon and goto properties and hit delete files! then go to C:\windows\temporary internet files and delete all the files or just delete folder and recreate (both folder are re-created on boot up if you dont...i think)
Just wondering if you tried my earlier suggestion in previous post:

Goto Start > Run > msconfig > Startup Tab and uncheck all but systray and restart > Run sfc

Using the second method will tell you if its another program that is causing the problem, you can then put the checks back one at a time and reboot after each one and run scf until you encounter the problem again.  Now you can deal with the program that is causing the error.  It might also be that when it encounters the dll file that is causing the problem, that is when it gives the error.

emery800, are you sure that is the article you intended to direct me to? It appears unrelated.

jpanderson, we ran SFC in Safe Mode, doesn't Safe Mode avoid all the unecessary start-up stuff?

Guru, we will try a scanreg/fix.

We did run a current NAV virus scan and all was clean.
Safe mode does skip some startup stuff on the computer but I'm thinking that maybe a program that you loaded might be causing the problem, and this program might be starting with the system even in safe mode.

In the absence of any other solution, looks like we will be re-installing.
