cannot restart win98 (unless battery is removed).

My PC is Pentium III, celeron 733, Ram 128, installed with Win98. It was bought two years ago.
The problem came last month. When I reboot, there was no display and even no sound.
However, When the battery was removed, Win98 restarted.
But When I scaned the harddisk, the system halted halfway.

APpriecate if anyone can help to show the possible causes.

If you are using a notebook computer and unable to boot the system with a battery in the slot. Then it is a battery or firmware issue.

1. Recalibrate the battery fully
If that does not solve,
2. Update the BIOS in the system

it sounds like cpu/cables came loose inside the computer.  i'd consider opening up the computer and checking for loose connections.

Thanks for all the replies.

Here is some more infomation.
It is the CMOS battery.
As the win98 did not restart, I removed the
CMOS battery. And Win98 restarted. Then I used ScanDisk (thorogh, for disk surface) but the task  did not finish as system was down.
Error messge was as " Bios Rom checksum error
        Detecting floppy drive A media...
        Drive A error, system halt"
After that, I tried to reboot (w/o CMOS battery),
but could not get any display.
However, after I let the PC rest for long time ( hours or so), the system can be restarted (w/o CMOS battery).
Again, I used scakdisk(thorogh, for disk surface) ,
system was dwon halfway, and I did not get any eror message as there was no display.

Looks like your CMOS battery is low. Have you tried putting in a new battery?  It is not expensive. Without a battery, you Bios will not work right. That is why you are having all the errors.
war1 is right. Replace the battery. bring it to a radio shack or local electronics dealer...worse comes to wrose contact the motherboard manufacturer and find out where to get one... Most are standard batteries though, you shouldnt have a problem finding one...
A new CMOS battery has been mounted and win98 restart normally each time now.

However, still got a problem. This problem occured in the past occationally. But it is occuring more frequently now.
Very often, all of a sudden, the PC shut down automatically without any warming or error message, regardless what talk it is doing.

Can this be due to RAM spoiled?

Glad you replaced the battery and your computer is booting up properly.

You are allowed one question per post. But your shutdown problem sounds like a power supply problem.  It may be overheating. Open the case and make sure all the 2 fans are blowing full force. While the fans are off, spray compressed air to clean them out. Does the problem go away?

Leave the case off while running. Do you get the shutdown problems now? I don't recommend leaving the case off permanently as there are high voltages inside the computer and is a safely hazard.
DavidMing,
We have not heard from you in awhile. Is everything working OK? To check if the RAM is causing your reboot problem, do an online RAM test at www.simmtester.com

If not the RAM, your rebooting problem may be due to bad video or sound driver. Uninstall and reinstall the drivers.

If an Expert help you, please accept his/her answer and provide him with an excellent or good grade.

Thanks, war1
Your system could be rebooting due to a bad power supply...  Many motherboards, when not recieving "clean" power will simply shut off their power momentarily (causing a violent all of a sudden reboot)

Replaced with new CMOS battery and removed one
of the two RAMs.
System OK now.

thanks to All!
