Upgrade Win95 to Win98 with a CD that is not an Upgrade

I need to upgrade a Win95 system to Win98 for someone who has a full Win98SE CD not and Upgrade.

I think this is possible, but only if you rename the win.com file and then run the setup.exe from the CD.

Will this work and keep the settings from the previous Win 95 setup?

It has been awhile but I think it overwrites the registry hence loosing some of the settings.
Actually I made a mistake. When you do this Win98 Will want to install in another folder like windows.000 so force it install in the Windows folder and this should retain the settings.

Will the full version install without renaming win.com CrazyOne as seem to remember that only an upgrade version will install over a previous version of windows unless you do the rename?

I need to install this in 5 hours after work so I want to confirm what to do on site and what to take (boot disks etc) and if it is going to cause problems. (I would prefer to wipe the system and do a clean install, but owner wants to try this first).

I seemed to remember about the windows.ooo folder and using the Windows folder to keep the settings.

yes I believe it does if it requests to install into windows.000 change it to windows (or whatever your current windows directory is called.

Best of luck
You do have to rename the win.com file.

You must remame win.com first then change to cdrom and run setup from x:\win98
